I have an early 1960"s JD 2010 industrial tractor that needs a carburetor rebuild. Should I send it off somewhere to get it rebuilt and if so, where would you recommend. Or I can purchase one already rebuilt and exchange mine or I can also buy a new Zenith carb. that fits several different tractors but is supposed to replace the old Marvel Schebler and the price isn"t much more than a rebuilt carb. Which route should I take? Any advice from you experienced John Deere buffs would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!

That's just a simple MS TSX carb and a kit and a good cleaning will fix most of those doing it yourself. Just depends on the condition of your old one. The Marvel Schebler TSX is a good carb unlike the USX used on 3010 to 4020. Several tractor supply places have rebuilts exchange. The new Zenith 14996 lists for $345.75 now that shows to fit the 1010,1020,2010, & 2020.

I am concerned about trying to rebuild the old carb myself, having never done one before. I can pick up a new Zenith carb for $286.00. What kind of a carb is the Zenith and do you know if it will fit without any modifications? My old carb was supposedly rebuilt a few years ago but it never seemed to make much difference in how the tractor ran. Now it is starting to leak pretty bad so I have to shut the gas off when the tractor is not running. I guess I'm just tempted at this point to go ahead and buy the new Zenith if it is a good carb and will do the job right. What do you think? Thanks!!

Unless something is real wrong with your MS TSX carb they can usually be rebuilt right for $85 to $200 or maybe more if it's the later 2020 carb with electric solenoid valve depending on which one you have and condition. New floats, throtttle shaft assembly, kits, and needle jet assemblies and solenoids are available for the TSX. Zenith 14996 is the recommended replacement for 1010 to 2020 so it should fit with no problems. Zenith does make several universal fit carbs that have longer throttle shafts on each side and the linkage is adjustable and reversible and choke is reversible so I may or may not come ready to install properly. You can test the float by holding it with pliers in a pan of warm water and will see air bubbles spewing out of float at a hole if it leaks.

I've gone through the carb several times on my 2010 forklift, and agree that its such a simple carburetor that you would be best served by doing it yourself. That would save a heap of money too. If gas is pouring out of it, I would check the integrity of your float. The float in mine developed a micropuncture and filled with gasoline. When you shut the tractor off, gasoline would start pouring out the intake throat of the carb. I bought a new float for $23.00 => problem fixed. Maybe your needle is stuck. I say take it apart and check float (float should be filled with air=> when you shake it, you should not hear any fluid moving around inside of it. If you hear fluid, purchase new float); soak remaining parts in carb cleaner, blow out orifices with compressed air, and re-assemble it with the mixture needle in the exact position as you removed it. Put back on tractor and see what happens. Give it a try.
