I have a 1958 JD 420T. The flywheel on this tractor has two marks d/c and spark. I would like to time the machine with a light to get a more accurate spark. The IandT says at 600rpm it should be 2 degrees below d/c. I dont have this mark at 2 degrees so how am i supposed to do this. Can anyone tell me how many degrees spark is below d/c. If not can anyone tell me the best way to time the tractor. Also, when the spark shows up in the timing cover it jitters up and down a half an inch to 3/4 inch. What could that possibly mean. Thanks.

JM, I don't have the degrees for spark, but if you can find a timing light that has a spark delay built in just set it to 2* BTDC & time it to DC. The spark scatter is probably due to worn distributor bushings & or a worn point cam. I'll look when I get home tonight to see if I have anything on (spark) degrees. Until you get the timing scatter to settle down even using a light will be iffy.
