What is the proceedure for removing the outer rear axle seal? My A is a high s/n 684000 and the I&T book says it can be removed from the outside. Do I drive a bar into it and pry it out? Does anyone have a seal number for a modern seal and not a felt one?
Also, how does one tighten the wheel clamp more once its bottomed out. Is it to be faced off and chamfered a little more to let it pull on further or do I throw it away and get a new one?

I just got done doing the seals on my late A.
What I can tell you is this , I called the JD house for the AA510R seals the ones they claimed would be Raw Hide seals for $23.28 ea.
I figured, hey them Raw hide will last another 50 years over the Rubber ones. Right!.
Well for the $23.28 ea JD sent the rubber ones.
Now Iam not saying the rubber seals are a bad seal.
Iam saying I could have had the same national seal for $8.50ea.
the Deere parts house led me to think I would be getting the Raw Hide seals and not the Rubber seals.
I did call the JD house and let them know what I think of their Raw Hide Rubber switch.

Mike, that outer seal is just a dust seal & isn't meant to stop oil from leaking out. The real axel seal is inside the rear case next to the inner axle bearing & the axle shaft(s) & bull gear(s) have to come out to repair.
~I'm not sure the outer felt retainer is still available, so unless you check & know for sure it is don't drive anything into it or other wise damage it. The outer felt retainer will usually come out with the axle without damage when it is pushed out from the inside [it sometimes helps to turn the axle out using the inner nut as a pusher & will usually push the outer felt retainer out without damage]. ~A lot of those wheel clamps don't tighten enough when they are well used, just cut a piece of tin or roofing flashing & put that between the clamp ring & the hub, that will usually do the trick....
