Questions about 1944 Model A

I have a 1944 Model A. I am very new as far as working on the two cylinder John Deere tractors. It has two caps on the hood (plus radiator of course). I was told one was for the gas and one for kerosene. Is this true? Is the big tank for kerosene? Another question I have is about the rockshaft, it is not working. How is it supposed to work. I would like to put 3 point hitch and hydraulics on this tractor, is this possible? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Aaron

The rockshaft part works off a hydraulic fluid pump that the PTO shaft turns. To drain it, there is a pipe plug under the PTO shaft a couple inches from shaft itself. You fill the thing from the pipe plug on the valve assembly behind the rockshafts. A 3 point won't work well for you with the powerlift because you are all up or all down. If you can fit it with a powertrol, you can do the 3 point better as well as do remote cylinders. Problem is, this option wasn't probably there in 44 so I don't know if parts will make this possible.

Aaron, Stan is right about your fuel tank orientation, thats the way all fuel tractors were built. Now fast foward 48 years is that the way your tractor is today? Do you find a lever at the bottom left of the dash and three letters spaced around it O-off, G-gas, F-fuel- if the lever is there and not set up it should turn to line up for those functions. If its there and hooked to a selector valve, are all the fuel & gas lines there. What i'm trying to say is that in all those years many all fuel JD's had been modified out of need many times because people gave up on kero. and usually went to burning gasoline and the valve pipes and gas tank gave trouble, also when overhauled many a tractor was outfitted w/gas pistons. Now i havn't seen your tractor so i just might be blowing smoke, but in my collection most of the items above were missing or broke. Now for your rockshaft do you have a long handle by the seat or a pedal assy. at the rear of the foot platform? Let us know and we will explain that the best we can. Bottom line you need an operators manual.

I have the pedal assembly under the seat. Will diesel burn like kero or would that be bad? Is YTMag the best place to get manuals? If not where? Thanks, Aaron

Aaron, You have what is called a power-lift, when working (operating foot pedal) rock shaft should move full travel, depressing pedal again(w/pto engaged for operation) rock shaft should drop back, might need load on shaft to see operation(cresent or pipe wrench- but be carefull don't get hurt)This system in stock form doesn't provide remote hydraulics. The powrtrol which cane out a little later(has handle) works better and will interchange. Diesel might be a little heavy- some use a mix of kero.,diesel and gas , a warm engine is the secret here, and when thru using run the carb. dry (and /or drain) you will not start up on a heavy fuel. YT here may have the manual , I get mine from Deere you should have OMR2000.

Can't help with rock shaft question but the tanks are the big one for distilate and the smaller one closest to driver for gas. This was used to start the tractor and then once warmed up the farmer would switch her over to, the cheaper burning fuel. Have a 41A that's missing the linkage for three way fuel switch. Think I'll leave it as is though so I don't have to mess with finding parts I need?

Small (rear) fuel tank is about a gallon, for gasoline for starting. Big (front) tank is for kerosene/distillate/power fuel/whatever you prefer to call it. Start on gasoline, warm up to 190 degrees F, switch to distillate. Unless working it hard, just use unleaded fuel - add some lead additive if you want to.

To operate the rockshaft, engage the PTO and then the clutch. If the rockshaft doesn't work then, you have more problems than I can solve.
