After reading numerous questions and replies I'm still confused. so here are questions. (1) Are trans and rear end oiled from same reservoir? If so, what is capacity, what weight and type oil, where do you add it (by shift lever?) and where do you drain it? Looks like two different drain plugs on bottom. (2) if not oiled from same reservoir, what is capacity, type and weight for tranny and (3) what is cap. wt. and type for rear end. (4) where do you add oil for rear end? any info appreciated.

The other guys have it right. - about 6 galls of 80-90. Oil used is a basic transmission oil with few additives.
I think the reason all this oil is in such a large reservoir is to to improve cooling.
While you are changing the oil then clean the hydraulic filter as well. It is inside the diff housing and you get to it by removing the PTO lever.

You need to get a manual for your tractor!! There is routine maintanence that needs to get done and if you do it your tractor might last another 45 years. The gear oil is 80 or 90 weight GL-1 spec mineral oil. (not 90 weight gear oil - not GL-4 or Gl-5!!) If there is an MF dealer near you you can get it there. Many oil manufacturers make it. Dealers have it in 5 gallon buckets. $25- $40 per bucket depending on brand. Tranny and hydraulics operate off same reservoir. My MF 65 takes 8 gallons. It fills through the opening near the gear shift. There are two drain plugs. If you have water in your fluid you may have to drain and fill more than once.

Hey tractor Dan...Thanks for the info. The 80-90 wt GL-1 spec mineral oil is for the rear end? Right? And where does one add the oil for the rear end? How much oil?
What weight tranny oil? That gets filled by the shift lever, right? How much oil?

Tranny / hydraulics / rear end. Think of them all as one big system. They are all filled through the hole by the gear shift. My MF dealer while noramally very helpful looks absolutely bewildered when I ask about the GL-1 fluid. They were an AGCO dealer that is a recent convert to MF though. They were "looking into it". I hope they get it.

Funny thing is, I work for a packager of such fluids. We also blend and distribute many fluids for many industries (www.excelda.com). I've been tempted to start doing research into the fluids used in older tractors as seeing if there would be much interest from others in having a "brand" that specialized in such fluids. I know it would make life with my F-20's and MF-35 easier.

Thanks,

Tony
