I have a Massey Harris 81 RC (narrow front end), I am trying to find out what engine it has, the plates on both the tractor and engine are very hard to read. The engine serial number is B 11271 and the tractor serial number is 402198. I would appreciate it if anyone has any information.

Thanks, Ed

81's usually had a 124 cubic inch Continental. Tractor serial number puts yours at a 1941, I have a '46

I have had a couple of Farmall's but this 81 is my first MH. Is there an online site where I can find out more information on tuneup etc. Points for the distributor. I am also looking for a belt pulley.

Ed

Ed. Try tune up specs at this site. Same as 23 & 21 or commonly referred to as the Colt & Mustang.

Or try this: Points gap to .020, plugs gap to .025, original manual says heat range comparable to Auto-Lite B7 for an 81, 20, 22, 21, 23.

Thanks for the info, I am just starting to play with this tractor, it was in really good condition when I got it and I have been using it some for just pulling the manure wagon etc. I want to restore it this winter. Thanks again,

Ed

But your 46 would be a model 20 right?

No, Massey-Harris made the 81 and 20 in 1946. I have a 1947 20 but my 81 is a 1946.

Now that's something I didn't know. So the 20 and the 81 would be pretty much the same tractor and they were made at the same time? Or maybe they phased out the 81 and started the 20's during the same time in '46? Were there any real differences between the 2 models? I think the throttle linkages and the governor setups were a bit different were they not?

Yes, you are right, it was a phasing in of the 20 and phasing out of the 81. Throttle linkages are somehat different, the 20 had the option of a live hydraulic pump off the governor, the right hand platform had cut outs for the hyraulic line to go to the cyclinder and the hoods on an 81 are 63" long vs 62.5" on a 20. Other than that, pretty much the same.
