hi all,

finally found the serial # on the mf 65 we're working on. it wasns't on the dash it was by the throttle linkage. i've confirmed that it is indeed a 1961. but i got another question. there are the letters CGM in front of the number. what do they mean? also should the throttle linkage be slack?

thanks jordan

hi guys,

thanks for the info. by slack i mean that it just moves to freely. say if you were running the tractor and you throttle it up, the throttle lever should stay up should it not? as it sits now when i pushed the throttle lever up and it just flopped back down(tractor wasn't running and is no where near running condition if that makes a difference0. any suggestions for removing the lug nuts on this guy. we tried the air gun and they are stuck tight. i applied gibbs penetrating oil liberally and it is soaking in the school shop now.

thanks for all the great help guys

Jordan,

Lug nuts were one of my biggest pains when I did mine. I don't think they had been off in 20 years. A little heat did the trick on the the lug nuts. The power adjust clamps and stops were another story. Heat worked on most of them but a few of the clamp bolts still broke while trying to remove the nuts. The cam clamps and stops were rusted solid. I had to cut the stops off. Servicable used clamps, wedges and stops were readily available at my favorite salvage yard. I replaced all the clamp bolts, lock washers and nuts. The replacement bolts are 5/8 x 1 3/4 carriage bolts that I got from a local industrial fastener supplier.
You'll find lots of surprises (unbudgeted expenses) as you proceed with your project. Don't be afraid to ask questions. The guys on this site are great and very willing to help.

Don

I don't know much about those tractors but it sounds like you are missing a spring in the linkage to hold the throttle linkage back. Or it is hooked up wrong.

C - High clearance model

G - Gas engine

M - Manual transmission

I don't quite know what you mean by slack.
In the gas model there are friction discs held by a star washer in the throttle quadrant linkage that can be adjusted to hold the throttle in position. Is that what you what you mean? Otherwise there is some slack in the system due to the number of linkage connection points but it shouldn't be really excessive.

The thottle lever that goes down thru the dash has two wedge strips, one on each side of it that goes into the special washer that is between the friction washers. the wedges and the special washer can wear and give you slack in the throttle lever response. The lever and washer should move together, no free play. You can try loosening the bolt that clamps to the throttle lever at the bottom, push down on lever and up on clamp to take out the free play, there may be a spring above the clamp. You may need someone to help get this done. If this don't correct problem you may need some parts. hope this helps you. Don Snyder

third party image

Here's a picture that shows it a little better.
The spring (star washer) and friction discs are clamped between the throttle friction plates.
