BEFORE I ASK ANOTHER QUESTION FROM YA'LL, I WANT TO THANK EVERYONE FOR THEIR HELP SO FAR. I PURCHASED MY FIRST 8N, OR ANY TRACTOR FOR THAT MATTER, SEVERAL WEEKS AGO. IT WAS A WORKING TRACTOR FROM A SMALL FARM IN OH. IT NEEDED SOME TLC. THE WIRING WAS CRACKED AND IN BAD SHAPE SO WHILE THE RAD. WAS BEING RE-CORED I DECIDED TO RE-WIRE IT. I REPLACED 1 WIRE AT A TIME AND FOLLOWED THE FO MANUAL. I HAVEN'T PUT THE HOOD AND GAS TANK BACK ON YET BUT I DID CONNECT THE BATTERY AND TURNED THE ENGINE OVER. I HAVE THE ORIGINAL 6 VOLT SYSTEM. AFTER RE-WIRING THE ENGINE TURNS OVER BETTER THAN BEFORE. NOW MY QUESTION. I DIDN'T NOTICE BEFORE, BUT IS THE ENGINE SUPPOSED TO TURN OVER WITH THE IGNITION KEY IN EITHER THE ON OR OFF POSITION? CHECKED THE SWITCH WITH METER AND IT IS WORKING. LOOKING AT THE WIRING DIAGRAM IT APPEARS THE SWITCH ONLY DIRECTS VOLTAGE TO THE COIL. DID I GOOF SOMETHING UP OR IS THIS NORMAL? I'VE NEVER BEEN MUCH OF A COMPUTER OR TRACTOR GUY BUT THE LAST TWO WEEKS HAVE CHANGED ALL THAT. I CAN'T WAIT TO PLAY IN THE DIRT ON THE "N" AND I REALLY ENJOY READING ABOUT THEM ON THIS SITE. THANKS AGAIN FOR ALL YOUR HELP. IT IS MUCH APPRECIATED.

You have it exactly right. The switch only controls power to the ignition system, not to the starter system. It will crank when you push the button regardless of the position of the keyswitch.

That's one reason why it is very important to retain the original starter button system, because it also interlocks the gear shift - if the transmission is not in neutral, the button will not depress far enough to make contact and crank the motor. This prevents you from running something or someone over if you accidentally crank it while it's in gear, even with the switch off. Make sure this interlock feature works and has not been disabled - it's an accident waiting to happen if it has.

The key does not affect the starter circuit. You can wear the battery down turning the starter before you notice you forgot to turn on the key so it will actually start. ( Not hat any of us would ever do that )

Do you think any of us would ever crank an engine until the battery is dead before remembering to turn the gas on? 8^)
