Bought a 9n in 1994, and its been a love/hate relationship. Installed 12 volt kit in '97. Had new sleeves installed, pistons rings, valves, rebuilt carburetor and distributor in 1999. Also had a 12 volt resistor block installed. Started at the touch of a button. Since the spring of '00 I had trouble starting it, and maintaining power to mow the back 40. Have adjusted and readjusted distributor. Cleaned carb this spring which helped for a few months, but now going back to the way it was. Talked to local shop about problem, and he said definitely fuel. Needed to crack up the adjustment needle on the carb which affects the starting and power. Cranked the needle 4 turns from seated position and tried start it. Little easier to start, but not much. After starting, let it warm up then adjusted top speed with adjustment needle. Didn't exactly get rid of sputtering. Was mowing for about 5 to 10 minutes when it started loosing power again. Why?

Other observations: 1. When I try to start it, sometimes I get no sparking. I turn the key to off, then on and try again. I might then get the engine to fire (doesn't necessarily mean it starts)

2. When I get it to start, it will run for about 5 seconds, then start to sputter. If I don't adjust the throttle control rod carefully, it stalls, acting like its starving for fuel. Yesterday when this happened, I noticed that the sputtering started just as the alternator kicked on and starting charging the battery (may be a coincidence).

3. I checked the sparks off the spark plug yesterday and noticed that when I tried it, I saw spark, if be a very light, small one. After turning the starter key off and on, I thought I noticed the spark being a little more intense then the first time. Maybe I'm imagining things.

Is it the coil, the condensor, the timing to the engine, fuel starvation that makes the engine sputter? I have changed the spark plugs this year (Champion H10), but did not install new tune-up parts for the distributor.

If you need more information, let me know. I will look to see if the gas vent tank is clogged, but it still sputtered after removing the gas cap. Help me, I just want my life back!

Dear Frustrated..... ...(why do I feel like Ann Landers?.....grin)
From the information you have provided, I would suspect you have a "low sparkies" problem.
Cheapest/eazist check is the ignition switch. Jumper around the ignition switch with jumper wire and alligator clippies. Enriching the carb mixture, generally makes for eazier starting/running, up to a point. But my best guess is your frontmount ignition coil needs to be replace..... .....Dell
