I am using a 5ft finish mover. I am having problems with the tractor overheating. I have flushed the system and have sufficient coolant. Does anyone know why the tractor keeps overheating - radiator boils over.

Are you sure it is overheating?
the radiator should only be filled with 50-50 antifreeze/water up to the top of the core. If you can stick your finger in the neck and touch water, you probably are filling it too much and it will flow out.

The back pto seal is bad and all of the fluid has leaked out. Do you think that or old oil would cause overheating? There is no thermostat and the waterpump is not very old. I usually use at least a 50/50 water/antifreeze mix.

I had the same problem. It ended up being several things. First my radiator was partially clogged(original radiator). I replaced the radiator(installed shourd as well). Second, someone (previous owner) used a home made gasket on the water pump that covered over half the water outlet on the pump. I replaced the pump and installed a new theromstat(recommended). I have yet to get my 8N to over heat now, even while cutting kudzu in the hot Georgia summer.

I had that problem several times and it was always seeds and chaff stuck in the radiator fins reducing air flow thru the radiator. I now clean the fins out about twice a year and haven't (knock wood) had a problem since.

Running without a thermostat is really not a good idea, because it increases wear on the engine and decreases efficiency of fuel burn (reducing power and increasing gas use). I'm not saying it'll cause an engine to wear out overnight, but it just might be the extra wear that'll keep your kid from running your tractor after you're gone.

Just keep the radiator fins clear and the cooling system tuned up and the 8N will stay cool in most any weather doing most any job.

I've got the same set-up as you do and like many others, the thermostat has been removed. I don't operate the tractor in the winter months and use it only for mowing.

Also, don't use just straight water in the cooling system. Try using a 50/50 blend with anti-freeze. The anti-freeze does two things. First, it raises the boiling point of the water. Second, the anti-freeze provides lubicant for the water pump and corrison resistance for the cooling system.

Lastly, like others have pointed out, make sure the radiator is clean of debris so air can pass through it.

My local 8N expert says he never uses thermostats in any of his tractors, they're too hard to install, most guys put them in the wrong way, they don't work right, etc. In the cold, he just let's 'em warm up a little longer before going to work. I'm waiting to see how I'll do this winter... This might solve your problem, but I'm not endorsing it yet.

I agree with your local 8N expert. I have had my 8N for 2 years - never used a thermostat and have had no problems.

I would check to make sure the radiator is clear of debris first. Even when the face looks clear, the fins can get plugged up with chaf....you should be able to see light through the face of the radiator..... .. blow it clean with an air compressor. Just my thoughts...after buying a new water pump, and t-stat, and fan shroud, I finally found that my problem was plugged fins in the radiator.
