8N won't shut off

Hello again, guys. Another dumb question for you experts. I have my 8N all rewired and converted from a 6 volt to a 12 volt system. Only one problem.... We got it all hooked up, started it, and could not get it to shut off. Turned the key off, did everything we could think of and finally had to unhook the battery, with sparks flying. Problem is, it is hot in all positions. We thought the old starter button might be grounding out and tried a new one -- same thing. Tried a new ignition switch -- ditto....

What are we missing? We used the diagrams that were e-mailed to me to rewire the 8N. My buddy the excellent mechanic is about to be driven nuts by this (I am ignorant about working on machinery so this is normal for me, but it is about to kill him!) Any hints or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Bari

Thanks for the help. My "expert" finally found the problem but the info on others also having this problem helped. Muchos Gracias! I love this site!

"George," my 8N is home now and ready to begin work tomorrow!

Thanks

Bari

On my 12 volt conversion with GM alternator the hot wire to the coil goes through the ignition switch. I thought all of the conversions did that.

Take a look at my page on the 12 volt conversion on the N series tractors...

Your page looks very good! Very nice pics and good instructions for the conversion.

However...I don't know who has/or if I'm alone...that has used the original saddle set up and set the GM alternator in it with out any special brackets? It is a good fit for me!

Has anyone else done this and would like to elaborate on the subject?

This one surfaces a lot. It appears that when people do the conversion, they do not put the diode in the lead that comes from Pin 1 of the delco altinator (Or equivalent) going to the ignition switch. A Radio Shack 10 Ohm 10 Watt Resistor could also be used as well. When using a diode you should put the cathode towards the altinator or the anode towards the ignition switch. Any diode capable of 3 amps or more at 50 volts should do. Some people like to use what they call a "Side Marker Light" in this circuit. It accomplishes the same thing, sometimes referred to an "Idiot Light"

If you want to use the resistor, here is a diagram of the hook up.. Click on download file now...
