My neighbor came by last night in his truck towing his Jube with another neighbor riding trying to start it. It was getting dark so they didn't stay long. He said it will run and work hard for hours and then, if he shuts it off, it won't start again (this has been happening all summer). He claims he has replaced all electrical components and installed a new (rebuilt) carbureator and still has the same problem. He claims good sparkies and fresh fuel. Any suggestions that I can offer him?

Good stuff, everyone! I went to the neighbor's last night and he said that the tractor started yesterday afternoon. It also started last night. We disconnected the fuel line at the carb and drained some gasoline into a white container. There was a lot of black debris comming out in just a pint. We shined a flashlight into the tank and there was a lot of loose debris there. It was not a rust scale. It kind of looked like something had been dropped (fallen) into the tank and got disolved, very light (weight wise). It moved around easily with the slightest rocking of the tractor. I told him he would have to clean the tank and replace the shut-off valve/sediment bulb assembly. It obviously isn't catching this stuff. He will also have to clean the carbureator. The inlet screen also had flecks of this stuff and I suspect finer particles got to the needle valves.
I've printed all of your responses as reference to follow-up on this after he cleans the tank and carbureator. I'll let everyone know the progress after the tank is cleaned.
Thank you all, again.

Had a truck behave sort of like that, and it was burned valves. Might do a compression check; especially when it's hot and won't start.

Tell him to get a can of starting fluid and the next time it won't run just spray some into the aircleaner intake and then if it won't try to start on that the problem is ignition. Simple!

He said they tried starting fluid into the intake and got no fire, which I agree with you, should mean no spark. And he has a new coil, as 9N'er mentioned, though it is possible to get a new coil that has an open when hot. A plugged fuel line is another place to check, but if it didn't falter for 3 or 4 hours, I would think that is slim, but not impossible.
I hope to get down to him in the next day or so and walk through the systems. I'll let everyone know the outcome or come back looking for more suggestions.
Thank you, all.

I would wire around the ignition switch and see if that makes it go. They can be decieving sometimes. Also inspect the insulator in the distributor. On the side mount the insulator where the points wire goes through the dist. And on the front mount the one where the condenser and points attach. Little paper like insulator. It can be shorting out intermitently.

that's it. I was scratching my head this morning thinking about what was the ailment of the last ignition problem I had...and that was it. I ended up ensuring that the wire was not grounding out, and I made a small rubber seal to prevent that and dabbed a small amount of silicone on the hole leading into the dist.. It was such a small and easily overlooked item, that that is one of the first things I check now. good point.

Coil? or restricted fuel flow/debris in the tank or line?
