We all drool when someone posts a gem (N) that they found in an old barn or got cheap. My find may not qualify as a gem for others but it did for me. On Monday Nov. 5, I was at one of the local used equipment dealers and bought some turf tires for my 8N lawn mower. While they were getting them off, I struck up a conversation with an elderly gentleman who happened to be there.
He mentioned that he had two Ford 9N's, one at home about three miles away and another at a repair shop about 20 miles away. I was drooling.
We went to see both and the one 20 miles away had an auxiliary shift lever on the right. I was sure it was a step-up trans but I did not know the make. We talked a bit and I went home to "think about it". On Wednesday, Nov 7, my copy of the F/FCA news arrived and low and behold there was a copy of an old add for an F&T step-up transmission. Yahoo!
I confirmed the F&T, using Dave Smith's website, and yesterday I became the owner of a 1943 2N with an F&T step-up transmission.
This was exciting for me, both for the rareness of it (and it does work) and that the tractor was born the same year as I was. Yahoo! That is my latest jewel.

Uh, yup. Brain f--t. You know some of us older guys wouldn't remember how to get home if we didn't get hungry once in a while.

I too found a mother load of goodies yesterday. Similar situation to yours...I was at the NH dealership picking up some rear axle shims for our 48 when the parts guy mentioned a retired rail road man who has "15 or 20" 8N's. I got the address and went over there to discover a field of N series tractors. He has parts too! Stuffed away in several little yard sheds were original wheels, drawbars, stablizer bars, lift arms, bumpers, and even a step up transmission! He retired and started fixin' N's as a hobby. Wow! He even had a drawer full of original PTO covers! I was like a kid in a candy store or a dog in a butcher shop...take your pick. I asked him if he ever got on the Internet and he said he doesn't own a computer. He really knows the tractors too. He said he started logging all the tractors he had worked on or owned since he retired and was up to about 200!

You lucky so-and-so. Does this fella sell any of this stuff? Does he know how many other
N-thusiasts there are out here?

Gr8Grndaddys8N, If my memory serves me right you are located somewhere in Nebraska, right? If you don't mind can you give me some more details on these parts you found. Don't worry I won't steal them all but I may need a few down the road when I start to fix up my dad's 51 8N. Thanks Greg NE
