Front tire options?

I've read through the archives. I need to order a tire because no local dealers carry them.

I have 4.00x19 rims.

I have 3-rib tires now and they carve up my lawn pretty badly. My tractor spends 99% of its operating time as a mower, so that's my first priority.

I read the post about a motorcycle tire, but I think that would actually be more expensive and not last as long.

Any other options for my rim size? Is there such thing as a 4x19 implement tire? I'd prefer an online dealer. Tirerack.com doesn't carry this size. I know about miller tire, but they're not much more convenient than special ordering through a local dealer.

Used to be that the six lug chevy truck rims where the same pattern as the 8N front lug bolts. We bought a couple at a scrap yard that could accept a larger tire. You can put a better wider 16 inch tire on them that wont cut up your turf. The outside diameter should be close to the same as the 19 inch rims with a 4 inch wide tri rib. Pic your own tread then. I still use my original rims with tri ribs and I am happy to mow my lawn with them. But dad converted his to the fatter tires and rims. Just watch for clearance. Don't get too carried away with width.

I'd like to keep my eye open in the classifieds for used chevy truck rims. How will these be described? As 16" truck rims?

The purists will hate me, but I drilled a few extra holes and put in automobile wheel studs, and use the space saving spares on the front. I too use it as my "lawn mower" with a 5' Woods Dixie Cutter, and have no problems. There are no puncture hazards I have to worry about. I don't use calcium in the rear wheels, and that can be a problem with the scraper blade and snow/ice. Have read in other posts here, barnyard "chemicals" aren't too good for "road" tires, but if you don't have that problem you can get spares at junkyards for $5. Cheapo Bob in NY

One of my tractors has the 6x16; the other has the 4x19. I needed a new 4x19 and got one the same day I called at a local tire retailer; it was $59.95 Cdn, or a little under $40 US.
The 6x16s that I have are almost totally bald. They are perfect for the lawn. You might want to ask around for some bald tires, but I think 6x16 would be better than 4x19 as the load is spread over the wider footprint. I think I heard that Land Rover rims will fit.

Someone once mentioned that they used a 4X19 motorcycle tire to replace their fronts. They were able to keep their existing rims, but had the tread that would not hack up the yard.

A set of 5X16 rims and new 5.5X16 implement tires should cost around $150.00 to $200.00. Used rims would save some money. The 6 hole by 6inch rim is common. Be sure the pilot hole is the same. I had the same problem you have, tires tearing up my lawn. Used tubeless truck tires would also work on this rim. I use green slime in mine on account of the thorns, and it really seals the leaks. Just my two cents worth.

Might try Tuckertire and see what he can do.
