A few days ago we had that discussion all about bushoggin, deck set-up, engine speed, and ground speed but not much was said about the pto speed to the mower. I've come across some info that some might want to consider.
That FO-4 manual mentions at para 102 that the N was designed for "pto operation at 3/4 throttle (1500 engine rpm)." I suppose the mower would like to operate at the proper pto speed also. I believe I'll keep that in mind when I'm mowing.

I built a mower to go in front of my old rototiller and had to calculate the blade speed. There are complicated ways to do this. I kept increasing the speed of the blade until it cut the grass. On the tractor mower it will cut at a fairly low engine speed, so I drive at a speed over the ground that is comfortable. Usually about 1/2 throttle in second gear, more throttle for longer grass. The ground speed in third is too bumpy on my field, but would work fine on a smooth surface. But as mentioned previously, you do not want to do the job in the shortest time as that will set a precident for the future. BC Mike C # 2 Herb 9N

My understanding that the desired pto rpm of 540 is obtained around 3/4 throttle. At full throttle the pto rpm is around 700+. We use our mower around some trees planted in a crp field and usually mow in 2nd gear at 3/4 to full throttle. Dad tried mowing through some buck brush and said that wide open in first gear worked well. I'd say it's all trial and error for your application, terrain and desired results.

According to my info you are right. The manual for my mower says 540 PTO rpm and my ancient manual says the PTO under load runs at 727rpm with the engine ar 2000 rpm. So half to 3/4 throttle seems reasonable to get 540 PTO rpm. I think under load a tired N would require more throttle than a good running N. Mike C # 2 Herb 9N

I think that unless your clutch is slipping the rpm is geometry and won't change. 1500rpm engine goes to 540pto. Remember, there's a governor between the "throttle" the operator moves around and the throttle on the carberator. The gov will adjust the throttle according to the rpm the operator is looking for. A worn tractor may need more throttle to keep the r's up but the rest is mathematics.
