Adjusting the main needle?

FO-4 says to make the final adjustment of the main needle with the engine running at "governed speed under full load." That's para 53. What does that mean? How do you put a full load at governed speed on the tractor while it's standing still so a guy can twist on the screw?

Rob..... .Thats the trouble with N-Carbs, all those adjustments....don't have 'em on modern automobiles. Realize, until smog controls, ya could twiddle the idle mixture adjust all ya wanted but ya still couldn't mucka round with main jet. Which implys that the main jet is not that critical.

The main jet adjust on N-Carbs in my opinion is really just a ballpark adjust that you can read on your sparkplugs. Its principle use on a tractor is to "micro-manage" or optimize fuel consumption. Something that bigtime tractor users are concerned with because it will affect profitability. I doubt that most N-Users are in that catagory.

I'd set mine at 1 1/2 turns and go do some heavy duty brushoggin' or plowing. Pull the sparkies annna iff'n the insulateers are not sootie black or blindingly white then ya's probably innna good ballpark and leave well 'nuff alone..... .Dell

Hi Rob,what I did and it seem's to be doing o.k.,is I turned it all the way in then backed it out 1 complete turn like the manual said, then 1 click more.which would equal 1/8".Try that and see how that work's.The only other way I know is trial and error.Which would mean getting on and off till you get it.Good luck, and be carefull.Yf,Jay 2NSC

Maybe I can get my girlfriend to adjust it. She could lay over the hood while I push some snow around.

Obviously, you have to run the tractor on your shop dynamometer to make the adjustment.

I don't have one of those! That's out. The generator shop will let me use there gizmo so I can get the 400rpm for the idle adjustment though. I'm thinking that adjustment is important to this cold weather starting.

I just got an 8N, been sitting for four or five years. I cleaned out the fuel valve and the carburetor float bowl. Replaced the plugs, points, condenser, cap and rotor. Found the brass strap from the points to the feed through stud broken and the insulator washer cut through. from over tightening the stud (I think) Fixed that stuff and tryed to start it. I had set the main jet adjusting screw one and a half turns open. the idle mixture at one and a half turns open. After it started I let it idle for a few minutes until the oil pressure came up and had time to fill the new oil filter. After it let it heat up for a while, while cold the oil pressure pegged the 80psi oil pressure gauge and pushed out the gasket on the new oil filter. after the engine and oil tempiture came up the oil pressure setteled down to twenty pounds at idle and fourty pounds at full throttel. I noticed that when I moved the throttle from idle to full quickly lots of black smoke came out of the tailpipe so turned the main mixture in until I could do this with out black smoke coming out the tail pipe. The engine seamed to run better and the idle mixture was almost right on. I may have to fatten up the mixture when I put the tractor to work, pulling hard. I hope I dident make this to long for my first post. I have learned a lot from reading all the post from days past. Hope This helps someone and I will mostlikely need some help later on. Thanks for the welcome Del. Lots to do on this old girl. Next will be the replacement of the cracked exhaust/intake manifold. Got one of them after market type, hope it fits? will drill and tap the hole in the intake side before instulation. I removed the generator and replaced the front bearing and painted her up, flashed the field, installed a new six volt battery and starts right up.Charges well and the voltage regulatoe is keeping the battery at about six point seven volts. Had some trouble at first, after reading the post about how easy these flood, I found that I was not useing enough choke. Now starts easy, one or two turns. Not to cold in central California (38^F) in the AM. Where can one find a finger screen for the fuel valve in the tank or do you have to make them. I dont mean the flat round one that goes in the bowl. Thanks for the help from every one on the forum. Frank Fox--- Foxey
