My buddy Herb the 9N was a little hard to start, had to use a second battery. The points are about 5 years old, maybe more, and were pitted but not burned so I will replace them and I was gonna replace the plug wyres anyway. I have 12 volts at the coil so I will assume it is a 12 volt coil, there is no melting plastic and the tractor runs fine for hours on end. What should be the correct resistor between the ingnition switch and the coil and what voltage should I have at the coil? Should I replace the coil? Also what about the rotor and condensor ? One last question, I think the starter may be drawing too much current and partly causing the hard starting problem. Should I have the starter serviced ? Thank you all BC Mike C

BC Mike C, >>>I have 12 volts at the coil so I will assume it is a 12 volt coil>>>

If the points are "open" you would read ~ 12V on both the 12 volt coil & the 6 volt Coil... Close the points and read again... If 6 volt = ~3.0 volts. Do you have a Ballast Resistor between the ignition switch (Key) and the top of the Coil?

Phil thanks, I will check the voltage again. Last time I looked there appeared to be three different types of resistors ( all under the dash ) between the key and the coil. I will also check this . BC Mike C

BC mike, If you have 3 types of resistors in that sucker its most likely your problem. The proper ballast for the 6 volt coil/12 volt is such that the Starter load has little effect. The battery can drop > 4 Volts and the ignition will still be happy. The eom Ballast followed by a Icr-13 is ideal.. If you measure Ohms (points open-key off) the eom ballast will be < 1.0 ohms and the second ballast will be ~ 1.9 (Do not use fixed resistors for 6 volt coils)

Hope this Helps,

This just in. I have 12 volts at the top of the coil, turned the engine, that dropped to 2.25 volts. All the parts are now off and in the garage. From the ignition the green wyre goes to a resistor that looks like original equipment held in place by 2 machine thread screws. From there to a ceramic resistor after market probably NAPA Echlin 254186. From there to the coil. The coil has zero resistance from the input to the pigtail, from the pig tail to the cap 11.5 ohms. The resistors are showing zero resistance on my cheap tester. If the coil is a 6 volt unit shouldn't there be a voltage drop unit to reduce the 12 down to 6 ? As always any help is appreciated. Mike..... ....If'n yer reading 12 volts at yer 9N's frontmount coil terminal and yer not having other runnin' problems, donnna fixxitt, its not broke. So donnna worry about the resistors, yet.

So yeah, yer havin' startin' problems that takes a second battery (12 volt I assume) Have you even checked your main battery? Sometimes they gotts enuff ummphs to run the sparkies, but not enuff to turn the starter motor.

But more likely bet, yer starter just might need to be rebuilt.

You'd be surprized what a good tune-up including new sparkies and coppercore wires will do for a hard starting engine..... ...kauff, rumble, rumble, snort..... ... Dell

I have not checked the battery in the tractor cause it seems to turn over with enuf revolutions, but when it gets it's hard starting idea it just does not fire. Hook up the other battery to it ( 12 volt )and it goes kauff, rumble, rumble, snort. That's why I was thinking about the starter motor. But I bet the plug wyres are fairly ancient so I will follow your advice of a couple of weeks ago with the plug wyres. I put new sparkies in it last week. Spectfully and thank you BC Mike C
