This is almost as frustrating as sail boat racing. Day two in the continuing saga of getting Herb the 9N to run. Yesterday it was new ignition parts, finally ran but misfired awfull. Today I cleaned the end of every wyre from the battery to the coil, I checked the carb again put in a new fuel filter. I rigged an ignition switch bypass wyre, nothing nada no runny zip not even a hint of running. Thought maybe I had zero compression, got the guage wouldn't fit under the tank but got it kinda angled at no. 4. Made 90 lbs no trouble even though it was leaking because of the angle. Got the bofo idea of puting the old pieces back on, first the coil because it was the easiest. Hit the starter button and Herb almost fell over himself wanting to run, as in fired right now. Runs fine no misfire, sweet as can be. The new coil made in taiwan must be defective. If they don't give me a replacement I will be blowing steam. Regards BC Mike C

Just a thought...

But, check the little squishy contact and the 'pigtail' contact on the Taiwan Coil before complaining...Had the same problem (now that you remind me) and the fix was to gently 'extend' both contacts for better...um...contact...

Please try that first and let me know what you find, as that drove me nuts a year or so ago...for about 2 days...

Make sure you have the little spring slightly streched on the new coil so it makes contact.

Salmoneye MikeC did that, already commented on that in my previous post Kauff Bauff just down the page. That's what got it to fire yesterday, today I yanked it's little pig tail some more and the piece that touches the cap. Tomorrow maybe I will try the new coil one last time. Thanks fellas BC Mike C

Bc Mike, That 12V coil should only have a .5(1/2)Ohm Resistor (instead of the 2 Ballast's)

Measure between ignition switch & top of coil (same as across the Resistor's)

Static timing should not result in the adjustment all the way at one end (max) because the pigtail will be destorted.. poor connection

Phil, I changed the resistors, chucked out the old and put in a new 1/2 ohm and meassured with my new meter. The screw that the pig tail touches is appears a little worn on the top as in scratched but it doesn't do anything except get poked on the head by the pig tail. Just a note the new points ( made in Mexico ) fit very nicely and seem better than the old ones in construction. BC Mike C

Mine goes down on a copper screw that doesn't move regardless of position of the point plate. I guess that's right??

Les, The Concave Screw "IS" on the Points Plate and you are moving the points plate. Next time you have your Dist off try it.

I want a good connection more than static timing, the advance assy is crude anyway.
