My '46 N starter engages but as soon as the engine fires, even just one little pop, the starter kicks out and spins disengaged. Mine is a 12V system with origonal starter. I have a bear of a time getting her going.
Is it time for a new starter or is there something I can check and/or adjust?

What Jim said...

When you go to put the new one in you may need to modify the casting inside the hole next to the ring gear .... Grinder down some.... read the archives about it

Pull the starter. If your flywheel looks good (we hope) you may want to upgrade your starter drive to a LOCKING drive. Some of these spin 'out' which is actually back towards the starter when the cranking motor first revs, and then spin 'in' when the flywheel runs faster than the cranking motor. Some of the drives available actually LOCK in the engaged position, until the engine rpm 'puts it back in it's place' with some authority. Don't be afraid to spend some money on this drive, though, anything under $60.00 is a deal, and DON'T buy one made in india. They aren't good enough in my book. Holler if you have any other questions

check the bendix unit or whatever the manual calls it..

and on a worse scene,,,and U have seen it.. the teeth on the gear on the flywheel are wasted.. in spots.. so then it is gear replacement time with a breaking of the engine to get to all of this
