We have a New Holland manure spreader ( not new ) that I use to sling the manure on the fields, or I disconnect the slinger and make piles at the end of the blueberry rows. From the piles we use a wheelbarrow and deposit manure on each plant. To save labour the farm boss wants to know if the manure spreader could be driven alongside the plants and deposit the manure out of one side. Any one have experience with this sort of modification. The manure is a cross between Appaloosa and Dutch warm blood with a small amount of sheep that has been composted for at least six months. I have until March to get it ready. BC Mike C

What you need is what I would call a feed hauler like they use at cattle feed lots to distribute the grain and silage to their cattle feed troughs.

I have seen them for sale used and at auction, they can go for less than $500 sometimes.

It is basically the same concept as a manure spreader, has a chain driven set of paddles that carries the feed to the front then an auger runs out the side to distribute the load into the trough or onto the ground as they drive along.

Sorry Mike, couldn't resist. I had a BIG spreader break the bed chains once and I had to use this to do a "side dump".

We just might have one or two of them side dump units around here. Originally purchased the spreader in partnership with my neighbour, that way we split the costs. He bought another one so a few months ago we decided that I would buy out his share. The sprocket and chain that drives the slinger unit snapped the next day. Still got to fix it. I like the trough idea from BG so I'm off to the ducting shop tomorrow to get one built. With the spreader running slowly it will dump the manure in the trough, from there it can be shovelled out using the side dump unit or a plastic shovel. The auger can be built later depending how the system works. BC Mike C

We have blueberry farmers here in Oregon that use a side slinger manure spreader to blow sawdust on the rows. Whatcom Mfg in Lynden WA makes a 3 pt sawdust blower that also might work.

I wonder if you could use a carry all with sloped sides to dump the manure to the sides without mechanical means. Too bad there isn't a sketch of such a thing...Oh wait, there is!

Could add part of a section from an old grain auger to the hole. 'course would need to figure out how to drive the auger. Nice drawing BTW.

Not only drive the auger, but reduce the rpms so you don't unload a bunch of bushels as soon as you turn it on.

No experience here with the modifications, but plenty with a spreader. The simplest thing would be a short auger underneath where the paddles are. It would have to ride in an open trough, and you could use the same drive cog that turns the paddles, just make a chain to run down to the auger which would have a cog on the drive end. You might have to rig up an idler cog to reroute the chain(or belt or whatever it uses). As far as gear ratios on the auger, it would have to turn fast enough to keep from clogging. (If it works, I'll be wanting licensing $$!)

Three good ideas in half an hour. First I made an error it is a Farmall painted red. There is room for a trough for the manure to fall in to six inches deep at the front 18 at the rear and 24 to 28 inches front to back. Could be 6 feet four inches wide with one end closed. If I removed the slingers to get better access I could shovel the manure out the end. Some would fall out. It would not be all automatic but it would be a lot faster than the current plan. We have 1200 plants on about 1 1/2 acres. Thanks for the ideas. Royalty cheques will be posted as soon as we make a profit. BC Mike C
