I went to turn on my 8N over the weekend and it made a funny loud noise in the starter and wouldn't start after that. When I push the starter button it clicks and the motor will sometimes hum very lightly. I checked the battery and it appears charged. Does this sound like I need a new starter motor or something else? Any information appreciated.

Connect a volt meter across the battery cables making sure the meter is on the cables and not the battery posts. If you loose the voltage drop when you try to crank the engine then one or more of the battery connections are at fault. You can check a connection by connecting the volt meter leads across the post and the terminator that is connected to it and then cranking the engine. If a voltage drop appears that connection is bad.

It sounds like your Bendix drive that engages the flywheel either stuck or broke. I would remove the starter and check it out. A new style "ratchet drive" is available from suppliers and now would be a good time to update it. Seems to me it's about $40. Removing the starter can require some grunting, groaning, and holding your mouth in the proper postion and putting it back can be as challenging. But first things first. Check it out then we can cover the rest.

Before taking anything off check all of your battery connections...clean them... loosen them...wiggle them ... and tighten them again. Then, if all that dosen't help, suspect something else...
