I finally found the right tractor it appears. I did not look for the year, as it does not matter to me, but it is a 50's model since it has the side mount distributor. The tractor seems to be in good shape the metal is straight and not rusty. The Axles seals are fine, and the tires are 95%. Here are the defects: Seepage from steering box area, minor oil pan seepage, runs rather rich, and the 3 point hydraulics settled to the ground after about 20 minutes.
It comes with a Ford 6 foot rear blade.
The lift worked OK, but did settle to the ground after 20 minutes or so. Is this difficult to fix?

The price is $2450, I offered $2000, and he is thinking about it. I think the tractor is worth 2000-2250...any other opinions?

Thanks!
Rob

did the lift arms sink with or without a load???
with the weight of a two bottom plow a 20 min. sink time is about normal, with no load i would be a little wary!!!
as far as price, and 8n in good conditon will sell any where from 1500.00 to 3000.00 here in eastern pa. just depends on how bad someone wants one.

UPDATE:

The arms lowered with a load, a 6 foot rear Ford blade. Thanks for the input on that one.

It seems my Dad has found a small cache of 8n tractors today. 3 8n's and 1 9n. one '52 with a rear blade $2250, one '50, new tires $2350, one with overhauled engine (front dist) $2600, and the 9n at $2100.

It looks like after several months of finding the right tractor and deal...I will buy one on Saturday for sure! I will post the info on the one I settled on.
Thanks,
Rob

Just for comparison, most 8N's like that around here go for about $2800-3000.. Sounds like a deal to me... especially if it is a 1952 model... Good luck...p

Does sound like a good deal. I bought an 8N on Tuesday of this week and paid $2950. It was in good condition but tires were worn. It also came with a scrape blade and bushhog. Good luck. It has been fun looking for information about the 8N on the web. There's lots out there.

Around here that N would be a grand under priced. In fact, it sounds too good to be true to me - but we seem to be on the high side.

As far as leaky steering boxes go, check the archives about filling the steering box with grease. I use J Deere, cornhead gearbox grease. Won't run out leaky seals.

Then check out the multitude of Zane posts on trouble shooting your hydraulics. He also sells a jig you might want if you have to go in deep.

20 minutes for the 3 point to drop? That's great! Lots of us wish ours were that good. I'd try lifting something heavy just to make sure it can do it, but it sounds like it probably can. This isn't something that needs fixing.

Rich running is no big deal, lots of them do. It can be a poor state of tune, poorly adjusted carburetor, or necessary adjustment for carburetor wear. Again, no big deal.

Oil pan leaks. If you mean around the crankshaft seals, that's not very uncommon. Fix it if you wish, or just keep adding oil. If it's a leak around the oil pan mounts, I'd look a little closer. Those gaskets don't blow out. So it would be a good indication he's had the pan off. I'd want to know why. Check also to make sure it's not a crack that's leaking.

Steering box seepage wouldn't concern me overly. In fact, it actually indicates someone's lubricated the steering box! As long as the wear in the box doesn't seem wild, I'd not loose sleep over this.

The price sounds ok. Not stellar, not earth shattering, but perfectly fine. You could find a better deal, but it would take you quite a bit of time, fuel and effort.

Don't let him think about it too long. Everyone is different. Some guys will get back to you with a counter offer. If he does and it's less than the original asking price I think you both win. If he gets back to you and says he wants to wait and try to get full price for it, then it's decision time, but I don't think he's out of line at that price and I'd advise you to cave in at that point and take it. BUT, if he's the type that just decides "to h#$$ with that cheap SOB, I'll just sell it to someone else" you my never get another shot at it. If he doesn't get back to you in a few days, call him back and ask him what he's decided. That way you can at least find out what he's thinking and plan your next move.

Sounds like a winner. Go for it. In the event you feel you made a mistake later, you can always turn it over-maybe for a profit even/ IMHO
