I put a new exhaust on the 8n, and fixed the air cleaner hose to get things in order. I still have a strong smell of gas when I run the tractor, and I have the main jet turned out only 1 turn as per the original owners manual states that came with the tractor. How do tell what kind of carb is on the tractor. I am spoiled by a tractor shop that stocks parts, only 5 minutes from work. They have carb kits for a few different carbs.

Where is the serial number located, I looked along both sides and can't find it. It is a side distributor model so I know it has to be 50-52.

When I put it into gear sometimes it will kill in 3, 4, or reverse. Rob

The carb (if original) on 8N's prior to ser # 276115 should be a Marvel Schwebler TSX241, and ones between 276115 and 313112 are Marvel Schwebler TSX241A. Those from 313112 on up are Marvel Schwebler TSX 241B FWIW

YOU CAN FIND THE SN JUST BELOW THE HEAD ON THE STARTER SIDE OF THE ENGINE. ONE TURN IS FOR STARTERS, YOU SHOULD THEN ADJSUT FOR BEST PERFORMANCE. GOOD LUCK.
