Wheel lock clamp kits

I have an axle with worn threads and I am trying to decide if I can get by with the "wheel clamp lock kit" instead of buying a new axle.

There seem to be mixed reviews in the archives regarding these wheel lock kits. Some say they are better than the original design since the clips always came off.

What troubles me is it seems like the locking nuts may prevent the wheel from falling off, but they can't hold it tight on the axle. That is, the standard nut tightens the hub onto the splines with every turn, but the clamp nuts won't do this. Am I misunderstanding how these kits work?

My axle threads are worn enough that I estimate I can roll the nut over with about 100 ft/lbs. Is there such a thing a "too worn" for clamping nuts?

There is a locking nut that was once called a "Swaggart nut" around here. A German machinest invented it and I have used and sold many over the years. It will not fix an axle and hub that the spline is worn so that the splined part of the axle protrudes from the hub before the nut takes out all the slack in the hub and axle.
The nut will however hold onto an axle that the threads have become worn down till the original nut will not hold the threads but slip when attempting to tighten it.
The Swaggart locking nut in the same size internally as the original but is split on one side and a tapered thread is tapped on the outside of the nut and has another locking nut that is threaded onto the inner nut and is tightened after the inside portion of the nut is snugged up. The outer nut is then tightened. When the outer nut is tightened onto the tapered portion of the inner nut it squeezes the inner nut together and causes it to clamp firmly down on the damaged threads of the end of the axle. I don't know if you could put the whole 450 pounds of torque on the nut but you can put enough to hold the axle on the damaged threads. I think that if you tried to put 450 pounds of torque it would probably break the outer jam nut before it got there.

Having an axle similar to what you describe and limited used parts available in this area I decided to see if it could be repaired. Checked with a machinist and said he was too busy to clean the threads so I decided to go it alone. Got out my thread file and went to work. Took about 2-1/2 hours and came out very good. Saved looking and waiting time and cost nothing.
