Well, it sounds worse than it was. While pulling a harrow drag to prepare my newly excavated yard for seed, I ran into a large birch tree. No, it wasn't a lone tree in the middle of nothing, I was going between 2 tree at an incline when the front tires decided to plow ahead instead of completing the turn! I messed up by hitting the brakes first instead of the clutch, lucky I was in first gear. It was slow enough that I did not get hurt, but my 8n is now out of commission for a little while. The force was enough to push the hood back, bend the grille, and worst yet, the rdiator was pushed into the fan! It won't be pretty once I get everything back in place, but I hope it still runs as good as it did. Just got back from the tractor place with a new radiator, front bumper, and a gas cap (mine leaked before). The moral of the story, If I had the bumper on, I would not have just spent $320 on new parts!! Those radiators are not cheap!

Rob, reminded me of last year when we were trying ton clean out our pond bottom. My brother's Case uniloader got stuck immediately and we used the 8N to help put a little attitude to the direction of pull since we didn't have a come-along. The Case weighs twice what the 8N does, it lurched and bumped into the front of the N. We had one of those heavy bumpers on front. It took the hit and bent but the grill and radiator weren't touched. I think N Complete sells those bumpers. They do come in handy sometimes.

I've often noticed that the steering is not very effective when pulling a heavy implement, like a plow in the ground. The wheels turn but the tractor doesn't.

8N brakes won't do much to keep you out of trouble, either. They're good for turning sharp or for a slow stop, but that's about it.

The only thing on an 8N that may quickly stop something bad from happening is the clutch. Everyone who drives a car has a natural response to an emergency - stomp the brake with the right foot. That needs to be un-learned when driving an 8N, because if anything will save you it's to hit that clutch quickly - and it's on the left.

This can be a problem with a heavy implement. The front wheels tend not to bite in, because the front becomes so light due to the leverage effect. Front wheel weights and water/antifreeze in the front tires can help maintain control.

Wow,

I did the same thing! 20 years ago I was turning Dad's tracor around and approaching some trees. I was 13 and got the clutch and brake pedal mixed up and hit the brakes, then the tree. I did about the same damage except the radiator was "pinched off" instead of replaced.

I just finished restoring this tractor and went about repairing the 20 year old damage. I thought I would just have to work over the grill, but when I dug into it the grill was junk, the doglegs had small tears, and the hood was shortened. Lots of welding, grinding, pulling, and prying, not to mention bondo, and it looks pretty good today.

I complained about the work, but Dad says it serves me right.

I once had a man help me in the dealership back in the early 60s who had worked at a dealership in Oklahoma. He told me about an old indian they called chief who came in to the dealership driving a team of horses and traded them for an 8N tractor. The chief had never driven a tractor so Charlie took him out and showed him how to get the tractor to go in first gear and then let the chief drive it around the place in first gear till he felt comfortable enough to drive it back to the reservation. Charlie told him to keep it in first gear till he got the hang of it.

The next day Charlie looked up and saw the chief coming down the road pulling the 8N with a team of horses with the whole front of the tractor bashed in. Charlie asked what had happened and the chief told him that he "put it in 3 and hit a tree"! Only tree in the whole field of about 40 acres!

Similar to the story about the farmer that traded his team of horses in on a tractor and they delivered it the next day. He was pretty proud of it till he pulled up to a gate and jumped off to open the gate and forgot to throw it in neutral. He was hollering whoa! whoa! Damn you whoooaaa! As the tractor was crashing through the gate. L8R----Fred

Zane , your talk of Indians reminds me of a professor I had in college. A couple of years ago he bought a completely restored 40's vintage Indian Chief. He was an accomplished MC rider, but he stopped by the local Harley dealer to show it off, got confused with the shifter, and plowed into a bunch of parked harleys sitting by the service door..... oops. I'd bet his insurance company wasn't real happy. Naturally he's "Professor Crash" to me now.

Take Care Steve

P.S. you were right about my Zane Thang....it was loose....works great again....thanks
