I have removed the mesh and cleaned it by soaking in a caustic solution. There was some really caked gunk in the mesh and it all came out by soaking. You have to be real careful when you remove the bottom plate in the air filter housing. It is held in by small tabs. Take your time and work carefully, and you can do it alright. Good luck!!

Yes it's removeable. The closest replacement material seems to be Chore Boy pot scrubbers. I don't know how many you'll need to replace the old mesh.

I don't think that the wire mesh is supposed to be removable in the air cleaner. Their usually is no good reason to remove it anyway. The wire mesh is supposed to be self cleaning. That is why the air cleaner is designed the way it is. I know that sometimes it can get lots of chaff stuck in the most bottom part but this can usually be blown out or picked out enough for the air cleaner to do the job it was designed to do.

The way the oil bath air cleaners work is that the oil that is in the cup is drawn up into the wire mesh (or most of the oil) and the smaller dust particles are caught in the oil covered wire mesh that was not caught in the oil in the cup which catches most of the larger particles because of the inertia of the particles won't let them make the turn to go up the wire mesh and they are trapped in the oil in the cup. The smaller particles that are caught in the wire mesh are washed back into the oil in the cup when the engine is stopped for a length of time. The particles settle to the bottom of the oil cup and this is what needs to be removed daily when operating in sever dusty conditions. For every bit of dirt that is in the bottom of the oil cup that is less oil to be on hand to trap the dust particles. No oil, no air cleaner!
