Thanks to everyone's great help in the past, I haven't had a post in a while. I have a new problem I need help with. I have a 1950 8n with the early steering. Both sector shafts have some broken teeth. Does anyone know of a machine shop that I could send them to and have the teeth re-built instead of buying two new ones at $175.00 apiece? I live 45 miles south of Cape Kennedy where all the technology in the world exists, but there is no place around here that will touch them. If they can't be re-built I will have to replace them. The excessive play in the steering gets kind of hairy at times. Thanks in advance for your help!

I would go with the replacement sectors, Quality Farm used to sell them, I would think maybe TSC might. Wenger's also sell them, good luck.

Lots of luck trying to find a machine shop that will weld it up, machine it down, and then heat treat them for less than the $168 apiece for new ones shown in the Stevens catalog, let alone a machine shop that will even touch that small stuff. And if you go to a bone yard to get a replacement or and up grade to the newer style, you may have a piece of junk that also has to be rebuilt. I know, I tried getting used sectors for mine and all I found was junk. If you are planning on keeping the tractor, I'd bit the bullit and rebuild the original steering box complete with new seals, bearings and races. Do that and it will last another 50+ years. My $.02

You may consider changing out your old style steering gear for the later style. I was unable to locate new sectors for the old unit at any price. The late gear is easier to adjust and has more of a mechanical advantage. If I remember right the old unit is about three turns stop to stop and the late is about four and a half. The unit will bolt in with some minor changes. If you get lucky you may find one in a Bone yard. Good Luck

It's my best guess that those sector shafts are hardened and cannot likely be welded on to be built up and then remachined. They will just fall apart after being welded on. Someone else may know more about this, on this board though.

Willard, I live in Melbourne, Fla. I don't mind traveling or shipping if I can save some money on a rebuild. Thanks.
