I was at a tractor auction last week end. I ask why my 8N with a double disk attached would not go deep enough into the ground. It just skimmed the top.

I was told to tie a 55 gal. barrell on top of the disk, with the filling hole up. Fill the barrell with water to get the desired depth with the disk.

Does this sound realistic.

Thanks in advance for all responses.

Thats about 500 lbs so I would think that would sink it in pretty good

Yeah, some weight can help. I chain a couple of long timbers to the top of my disc to get the disc a bit deeper. Then when all is nicely done, I make another pass with the timbers dragging behind everyhing. Makes for a nice, flat seedbed.

My Grandmothers disc harrows is ancient.
It was meant to be drawn by a draft horse.
It has a seat, and the 'wings' with the discs, both have iron 'troughs' along the top rigging.
My Grandmother used to pull it with her Farmall H.
If it didn't cut deep enough, she would take a swing past the stone pile and have us load up the troughs until it cut to the depth she wanted.
I like the drum idea better :-)

Wouldn't it have been easier to just add Grandpa? Self-powered loading and unloading!
