First I would like to thank all of you who have offered information regarding the 8n cost and application message I posted.

Please comment on the following:

Is it normal to have oil blow-by coming out of the fill tube vent? If not, what could be causing this?

Please explaing why the 8n is not a good tractor for rototilling, the gentleman selling the tractor insists that it is.

I have an 8N and I have a tiller...but never the twain shall meet. I use the tiller with a MF 245 in low range, low gear, way slower than walking speed. First gear on the 8N will pretty much skip across the top of the ground, unless it's been plowed and disked, and even then you won't get much penetration. Listen to these knowledgeable folk...yes, you can till with an 8N but you won't be happy with the results. The seller has lower tilling standards, brought on, I suspect, by his desire to sell the tractor. As suggested, if he has a tiller, make him show you. Ask him to borrow one if he doesn't have one. Bet he won't bother. BTW, $3,900 is way too much, especially if blow-by is involved.

Rob..... ...Every spring, the inexperienced ask the N-Board the same thing. "Can I rototill with my N-Tractor?" I'm glad you asked. And bj/8n/mt's answered it best. N's are just too high geared even with a Sherman aux tranny.

Remember, a good salesman always tells the customer what he wants to hear.

If you really want to make your tractor seller have a heart attack, ask to do a compression test infront of his face to check why there is "blow-by" coming out the oil breather cap. Ford specs: 90 psi min. Write'em down on a piece of paper and don't share your knowledge.

Then start negotiating the selling price..... ....Dell

The ONLY way I know of for an 8N to be effective for rototilling is if it has the very rare, and fragile, Howard Auxilliary Transmission which slows the ground speed but allows the PTO to turn at the required 540 RPM.
If that tractor has one, it will work. If not, I'd say nope...

There is also the pounding that the pto shaft takes from the tiller action. Not good on seals and bearings and gears. Even in low gear and riding the brakes, you cant go slow enough to really till the soil well. I have a two bottom blow that I use to turn the garden with. I just bought the little lady a walk behind 7hp tiller for an early Mothers Day present. You should have seen the glisten in her eyes when she saw it. I know what you guys are thinking, I admit to spoiling her. I got her the plow last year for Mothers Day.

If you have never roto tilled it is kind of hard to visualize.

You need to put a fair amount of power on the ground while going slower than walk speed. Something with a hydrostat would be ideal. Even with a Sherman step down transmission there is just no gear in an 8n that will go slow enough and let you turn 540 PTO rpm. You can do a little damage to the sod but you can't truly roto till at the slowest speed an 8n will run.

8n's are plowing fools and you could do what a roto tiller does with a plow and run back over it with a disc. Or as I said before rent a rear tine walk behind tiller. You will only use it once a year. Either you won't need to till again or you have enough acreage that you need more than thirty horse power. 8n's are great little tractors but they have their limitations.

Don't doubt seller claims it can be done. He might also claim you can pull six bottoms. Your money--your call.

Your mileage may vary

The blow-by is caused by engine wear is not worrisome unless it becomes excessive. The 8N ground speed in 1st with 540 PTO rpm is considered too fast for the tiller to do an effective job. I've never tired a tiller, because I don't have access to one. I'd love to see if the assertions are true. If the man has a tiller, try it.
