I haven't seen a parts layout for the optional air cleaner extension. The bottom bowl has a gasket but I don't know how the extension mates to the air cleaner.
My extension is held on to the air cleaner with the same type clamp that is used to hold the bottom bowl. The bottom of the air cleaner has a land for a gasket. Neither the top of the air cleaner nor the extension has a land for a gasket. I did manage to insert a home-cut cork gasket between the air cleaner and extension but it can't be right and it sure isn't the same scheme as the bottom. Wouldn't be surprised if the gasket doesn't slip to the inside and leave a gap. I think I need a gasket and I'm hoping I won't get as much water in the bottom bowl with a gasket there. I think it fills full of water when it rains.
Anyone have information on this air cleaner to air cleaner extension joint? Should I have a different clamp or something?
Maybe I should just clean and replace the oil every 10 hours like the book says. More often if it rained.

Two ideas come to mind: 1. Set the extension in place and wrap about two layers of black electrical tape arond the flange area, then place the clamping band over the tape. or, 2. Put a little silicon gasket sealer on the flange before assembling, then install the clamping band.

It just came to me that I could cut that gasket really wide. Like with only an inch and a half hole in the center. That would be a gasket that likely wouldn't get push or sucked into the air cleaner because it would be what 4" to 5" in diameter and more than 1 1/4" wide. Now it's like the bottom gasket with a large diameter and only about 1/4" wide.

Rob,
My 2N has the extension. I assume you are referring to the Harco air cleaner extension. Mine is under the hood, and does not extend through the hood as it does on an 8N. I do need to replace the jar and bail. I have never seen a gasket in any literature, but I could be wrong. It would make sense to keep it airtight, but again I have never seen a gasket mentioned.

I don't know about Harco but this extension is shown in a picture on page 5 of the Owner's Manual Instruction Book.
It extends through and to 14" above the hood via an 1 1/4" or so tube with a screened cap on top.

Rob,
There are two different extensions. Mine is a pre-cleaner that is placed before the regular air cleaner. Yours is a dust extension, i.e. it raised the intake above the hood when used in dusty conditions. As mine dosen't have one, I can't say how it is set up.
