Sounds like a coil right?

'48 front mount, 12v

Runs great until it gets warmed up, then starts to putter out and and eventually dies.

Check fuel flow, it appears to be fine. No problem running cold.

Now the real reason I think it's the coil. Last summer the first time I mowed I baked the coil. Except then it just died and would not restart.

Something else I am overlooking?

Try jumping the key switch to eliminate that first. Then I would suspect the coil or fuel flow.

What posts do I jumper on the switch? There are three posts on mine -- it looks like a delco switch.

Hmmm...well I guess that in itself eliminates the standard N keyswitch that sometimes has a problem with overheating. A Delco keyswitch eh? Guess I've never heard of a Delco switch on an N before. I'll have to default to someone with more knowledge that I to help you with this one.

Yeah, it's almost assuredly an aftermarket automotive switch, and not original N equipment.

Rob..... ....3-terminal Delco switch, toggle switch, OEM Ford switch. Doesn't matter, you have battery going in on one of contacts and when turned on, you should have battery volts coming out on the other terminal eventually going to the coil. Jumper between the two, to eliminate the possiblity of internally gunked up switched contacts. Just takes a couple of minutes.

Howsomever, I would concure with you, that most likely, you are describing typically toasted frontmount ignition coil overheating failure.

Now you need to determine wheather you have the OEM 6 volt frontmount ignition coil, or the newly avaiable 12 volt frontmount coil. Both require some external resistors to work on 12 volts BUT the 6 volt coil resistor requirements are different than the 12 volt coil resistor.

If you are unsure what resistor/coil scheme you have, please post, and we'll try to talk you thru it..... ....Dell
