The numbers on the engine block appear to be 9N302438 . The emblem on the front of tractor has the small 2n written on it. Is it a 2N or a 9N or what, thanks in advance for your help

Sounds like you have one of the very last of the 2N's. Probably was built around the same time the first 8N's were coming out. What color is it? 2N gray or redbelly? If it's a redbelly, can you tell if it's been repainted? Just curious.

If you will click on the link below, you'll see that the Smith's N page specifies that the 2N serial numbers end at 9N296167. There is something fishy about the serial number you cited in your post. It appears that serial number 9N302843 is not a valid serial number. Could you have misread it??? IMHO

Leffingwell p. 169 has a picture of 2N305295 and 8N000637, June 6, 1947 casting dates. Most other sources list 9N296131 as as probable last production number.

All 9N's and 2N's have serial numbers that begin with 9N----- -. You have a 2N.
