could anyone advise me as far as the proper color of a ford 2N. I realize it is gray, but if I go to purchase the paint locally, what do I ask for as far as type and color

Here's what I did. I have a working tractor, not a trailer queen. I painted it with rustoleum Professional Series "Smoke grey". It was very close to the original color I found inside the rear brakes. It's cheap, durable, and easy to spray. But the best thing is that you can buy spray cans that are the same color, for touch ups. When it gets scratched up, which it will, no need to get out the spray gun, etc.

the results were fantastic, and at least it doesn't have one of those "ferris wheel" red and grey jobs trying to be like an 8N.

Now I agree if you are creating a museum piece, get the IMRON at over a 100 bucks a gallon, and go for it. But 99.99 % of the experts can't agree which grey is correct.

Take Care
Steve

Even the original batches of "Ford Grey" had variations.Take a photo of one (in natural light )or take a pigment sample to a paint store and get it reproduced by an expert. If there are no standard "Ford Grey" enamels available from a Ford dealership or some other kind of Gray colored paints you are comfortable with get a batch custom made by one of your local paint suppliers.

I recently did a brake, sure seal replacement on my 2n.What surprised me was the paint under all the oily break dust mess. The backing plate(where the shoes mount) look like it was just painted yesterday. So if you need to find the right color to match, just do a brake job.
