Blue/White Smoke after a Tuning the 8n

Hi all! Been lurking for a while, but didn't have a reason to post until now...

Since buying my 49 8n (front mount distributor) 3-4 years ago, I've run it as-is without much maintenance (besides oil changes, lubes) and it's run well but weak.

A couple weeks ago I replaced the plugs, wires, dist cap & rotor. At least one of the old plugs looked like it had never even been firing.

Upon starting it up, it ran amazingly faster, much more power, etc. The downside was the exhast started showing blue/gray smoke. Prior to the tune-up, the exhaust was burning relatively clean - never any major smoke.

I added some marvel oil and and ran it for some hours and the blue has cleared up - it is just very grey/white. Is this possibly a simple timing or points/condeser issue? I've heard its a daunting task and even remember someone had a web page out here giving tips on how to do a front mount dist tune-up.

Any advice or tips would greatly appreciated.

Changing the points on the front mount distributor is a snap. Remove the two bolts holding it to the front and take it to your work bench. Change all the parts ,retime and boy will your machine run better..I have fords book on this procedure & it is easy..Don't forget about the resistor..

The front mount distributor is actually pretty easy to tune up. Since you need to remove it to do the tuneup you can get it on your bench and work on it easily. Hey, if I can do it anyone can...

Usually the color of smoke can be an indicator of where the problem may lie. Blue is usually excess oil being burnt off. Black usually indicates the fuel mixture is too rich. White points towards coolant being steamed away. If the white smoke is not present when the engine is cold, but becomes more noticable when engine is hot, I would lean towards a leaky head gasket. Hope this helps.

From what I can tell, it isn't the white type of smoke I've seen associated with coolant/head gasket problems. It is a light grey/ashen - very dry type of exhaust. Years ago when I worked on V8's I think I remember this being associated with poor ignition (early/late firing, etc.) Does this help for diagnosis by the armchair mechanics out there? :-)

Thanks very much for the feedback!

Rob..... ..Pull your plugs and "read'em". As long as their not black/oily your probably ok. You may be still burning off your MMO treatment. If you really gotta know, check your compression, Ford specs: 90 psi min. This would eliminate/confirm any leaky headgasket concerns. OR establish that you have very worn piston rings..... ...Dell
