I replaced the coil last week and it didn't solve my problem.

Symptoms: runs fine until it warms up, about 10 mins, then starts to rev, then stall, rev, then stall. It doesn't over rev, just up to the throttle setting.

This is a 1 year old rebuilt engine from CT. Haven't had any problems all year up until now.

The fuel flow appears to be fine, but does fuel flow change as the engine heats up?

Intermitent irregular running always makes me think of an intake manifold gasket leak.

Mine would start and run anywere from 10 seconds to 5 minutes, then sputter and quit. The ballast resistor was intermittent when warmed up. Just a thought....

Rob,
Mine acted up like that a couple of weeks ago. It seemed like it was leaning out and the governor would take action causing a surging condition. Took the carb apart and cleaned all the passages and it cured it. Something else to look at.

Does it actually stall out, or is it "hunting". Have you tried carb cleaning and adjustment, as well as cleaning all filters from the tank to the carb? I hope you don't have an inline fuel filter and rubber fuel line.

Hmm. Hunting. Never heard that term except for automatic transmissions. That might accurately describe what is happening, but I am not sure.

The engine WILL restart at lower RPM, or run fine at an idle with no load.

A carb cleaning was next on my list, but why would heat cause this?

I do not have a fuel filter.

Rob..... ...there are 2 time/heat related bad running problems. 1) bad frontmount ignition coil, usually show up about 45-60 mins. 2) gunked up ignition switch contacts and shows up about 10-15 mins. Eazy enuff to check, when it starts cutting out and sputtering, (this is a sign of bad sparkies) jump around the ignition switch, if it straightens up and runs nice, you know what to do.

While there have been reports of overheated fuel vapor lock, it is not really common in a gravity feed fuel system..... ....Dell

Have you eliminated a bad key switch? Just jumper around the key and see if it helps. If it does, replace the switch, if it doesn't, look somewhere else. HTH Steve 8N 169302

I have an aftermarket delco style automotive key switch, which I understand eliminates the possibility of the traditional key switch problem.

Rob..... ...doesn't matter who made the ignition switch, it can go bad and cause bad sparkies which causes "bad running"..... ...Dell

Have you checked the gas tank vent, lately?
Just a thought. :{)

Now I feel stupid. I've installed my own engine but I don't know where the "vent" for the gas tank is.

Tank vent is under the hood. Check the tank ventilation, after it runs for a while, open the gas cap, and listen for a vaccum or pressure. If it has a suction or pressure buildup, the vent is clogged. Mine will run for a long time before it affects mine. I would check the switch first. Run it til it dies, jump the switch, if that downt work then open the gas tank. HTH

It's a very small hole punched in the little dome on top of the gas tank. Just loosen your gas cap and see if that cures it. If it does, then the vent is clogged. If not, then I'd be trying another coil. New ones can be bad out of the box. This assumes you've already checked the keyswitch and all wiring connections.

I'll look at the vent.

I'll have to ponder buying a third coil. I don't think the local shop will take it back based on my observations.
