Sediment bowl filter questions

I purchased a replacement sediment bowl filter with a nice screen on it from Tractor Supply Co this weekend. It would not thread into my tank at all, even though the threads looked identical to the ones on the filter assembly I removed.

The package says it's for all N tractors and some Massey's as well.

Before I blame this on cheap Chiawanese manufacturing, is there something I am missing?

Also, is there an easier way to drain the fuel tank? Since my valve assembly was clogged, I couldn't drain through the sediment bowl filter, and had to spill a LOT of gas.

Rob, I place one or two 5 gallon gas cans beside the tractor and shove a rubber hose over the end of a funnell. I then hold the funnell under the sediment valve assembly as I unscrew it. The other end of the hose I put in one of the cans. Works well and I don't lose a drop. Good luck next time.

Too bad you did not buy a New Holland (Ford) valve now you do not have a reserve. check the solder or glue holding the screen on.

Is that what the "RES" means on the top of this filter I bought?

Rob,
Take a look at the glue,or epoxy, holding your in tank screen on above the threads. The last one I bought had a little to much on it, making the diameter a little big above the threads. I took a razor blade to it and shaved a little off and it went right in. Worth a look I think.

Not sure about the valve assembly. I bought one from Just 8N's and it fit fine. Used a little thread tape to get a leak proof fit. Had a similar problem to yours and emptied the tank using a little hand pump that is usually used for filling kerosene heaters.

Where abouts are you in Kansas. I grew up in Brown and Doniphan counties. Specifically, Everest and Highland.

Rob..... ...donnna know about your fuel cuttoff thread problems. Should fit if the card label is right. You're probably not holding your chopsticks ....er....tongue just right.

'Course its problably too late now but I let gravity drain the gas out of the tank by disconnecting the line at the carb elbow and letting it pee into a big buckett, takes about 15 mins. Hopefully, you didn't have your tankfull..... .....Dell

You can't drain through the fuel line at the carb inlet if the sediment shutoff valve is clogged. (that was my problem).

In that case, to drain the fuel tank you remove the cap, turn the tractor over and drain the tank into an apropriate container.

Ed,
Better yet, if he waits till night, the world will revolve and we'll all be 180 degrees of where we are now. Then he won't have to tip the tractor over!
NOT a physics major. :-)

Rob,
For the sediment bowl, there should be a cork gasket and a brass screen only. I've never seen a "filter" unless you are speaking about something from the filler tube. The best way to drain the tank is to turn the sediment valve all the way open, and remove the drain plug from the carburetor, and drain from there. At least there you can put a bucket to catch the gas.
If your filler tube is plugged, you may want to invest $6 in a cheap suction pump (those old fashion cheap plastic affairs with two tubes and a suction pump). HTH
