Does anyone have any magical method of removing the bolt/hand crank drive that holds the front pulley on the crank shaft? I'm guessing this one has never been removed. I assume that it is left hand thread (clockwise to loosen). I've tried moderate heat, release-all and hammer impacting the wrench. I don't want to break anything but it has to come off. Thanks

Rob..... ...my secret trick for removing front crankshaft bolt (150 ft/lbs to tighen) is to stuff some soft 1/4" clotheslines rope innna any sparkplug hole. The crank will come around and crush the rope against the cylinder head and stops the crank from turning but doesn't hurt anything. Naturally, remove the rope when done..... ...Dell

Dell (or others)....I have posted a lot of queries here and (sometimes) got the "mind reading" sermon.

In Dell's response, he references the original poster's front mount distributor.

Question: Does your response also apply to the 8N side mount distributor? I have the infamous "ballast resistor" and don't seem to have any problems. (I have replaced a couple of coils....but I chalked that up to normal "wear and tear").

TIA and BTW....DSTM is Don't Shoot The Messenger!

Now think about this. If it were left hand threads it would be trying to be loosened when you cranked the engine by turning it clockwise and that would unwind it pretty soon and it would fall out.

The threads are right hand threads and you loosen it by turning it counter clock wise to the left.

I usually use a boxed end wrench and hammer it to break it loose or if I don't have a boxed end handy I usually just use a steel drift and strike the flat of one of the crank projections counter clock wise and they always come loose fairly easy.
