I've learned so much here.

I used the "rope in the cylinder" trick to remove a starter pulley...on my weedeater! Messed with it for about half an hour trying to get the starter pulley off. Tried various tools and wedges to lock it in place. Came right off with the rope trick.

No useful information, just appreciation.

Ya...cool trick, with one caution. If it's an overhead valve engine, may SURE it's on the compression stroke!

You put some of a piece of 1/4" soft cotton rope down the spark plug hole. Then you turn the crank (by hand) until the cylinder comes up and mashes the rope up against the head. The idea is this will either a) prevent the crank from turning so you can unthread whatever is on it or b) pop the head off (if the head bolts are removed). Oviously you don't want to use the starter to turn the motor over (unless you're going for option b)

I would be very hesitant to use the starter. The inertia might be too much and you could bend a rod or break something.

I imagine it would be a good idea to tie a long bolt or stick the end of the rope if you're going for option A. Could be a trick fishing that rope back out of the spark plug hole if it all falls in.
