Did my lost axle bolt destroy my radiator?

I was out mowing my lawn this week when the front of my 8n started making the noises of metal-on-metal. Next came the leaking of coolant.

What happened was my fan and radiator collided with each other. I checked the water pump and everything seemed tight - a rebuilt unit that has been used the past 3 yrs.

The next thing I noticed was one of the front axle bolts fell out on the right side, causing the alignment of the front end to shift.

Absent any other indication, is this likely what caused the failure, or is the mounting of the radiator independent of the axles?

So, I must go about buying a radiator + whatever else is needed. Questions:

Recommended brands (country of origin) of radiator to buy and from where? Is the 139.95 special on ebay of decent quality?

In order to get this back together quickly, what other parts should I order so I can replace/install while I reassemble it?

Thanks very much in advance

Rob

Hey Ed now would be a good time to finish that paint job. The line gives it away that the hood was not removed befor painting it. Now would be the time to make all the bolts for the radiator and hood correct. Mark H.

Tan Line that's a good one! Not making fun of your tractor just that line blew me away when I seen it. I guess the new decal on the air cleaner topped it off. There are two bolts that hold it on and you would think they would have removed it and painted the top haft. Mark H.

good point, that is what I wear to go to work. I grabbed dad real quick to pull the hood before going to the office. I assure you I was in a dirty tee shirt and torn shorts while pulling the bolts.

Ed, You are very fortunite to have you're dad around to help with such things. He can't deny you are his son. What is the 2x4 for? If you start to do something dumb, does he get you're attention with it. (Chuckle)

Well, as far as the lumber goes, we had a little difficulty pulling the hood. As I told you above, the previous owner did not have the hood fastened with the lower two bolts as he should, but rather just resing on the radiator. He also had the hood bolted under the instrument panel, not on top of it. Add the bumper into the equasion (I should have taken it off first) and when we tried to remove the hood, it got jammed. The forward slope of the instrument panel pushed the radiator forward as we lifted it up. This pushed the grill into the bumper and the dog legs sort of wrapped around the bottom of their mounting bracket. I guess dad wanted to make sure he kept the hood jamed so he dashed off and got the 2x4s and placed them under the hood by the steering wheel.

check with Stan Strojney. I does have a few laying around at times. He has done me well in the past. Eldon Brow is parting out a couple of Ns also. Another good guy to deal with.

Rob..... ...sorry about your misfortunate radiator.

Its a strange business, I can get my N-Radiator rebuilt for $200, but I can buy a new forign radiator for $140. Ford/New Holland only sells forign for $160. This was 10 yrs ago..... ...Dell
