9N PTO/overspin clutch Question

I bought a 9N with an old Howard Tiller attached
to the housing by direct mounting. after some clean up and removing the tiller, I wanted to use my brush hog. Bought a spline clutch and behold-- it
does not fit like it does on my 8N. The spacing is too small so the clutch will not slide in nearly far enough to engage the roll pin. Splines seem ok.
I note the PTO output housing has a ring with spanner notches in it. I tried to put my 8N PTO shaft cover on and it does not fit either. Is this shaft possibly a shaft that came with the Howard or is this a case of needing a different clutch than commonly sold. The roll pin hole is in the shaft.
Thanks for any help.

Your 9N has a pto in that was used from 1939-1942 you must grind some off the housing so it fits in, if the splines are worn or the seal leaks you may want to install the 1943-1952 style so it is less exspensive to repair down the road.

Rob..... ...how bad do you really want to brushog with your 9N? (assuming its a flathead 9N and NOT a OHV Fergie TO-20) Probably best bet would be to change out your old PTO shaft for modern 1-3/8 PTO. ..... .Dell

Not familiar with the hupp but there should be around two inches of spline sticking out beyond the collar. Sounds like somebody has modified the shaft to fit the hupp. If that is what has happened only answer is a replacement shaft. If you go that way consider the 1 3/8 inch style.

Your mileage may vary

We bought one of those to put on my pto, and then my tractor 51 8n started to act up, and it busted the pto off, and I found that there was an add-on thing that made the diameter larger, so you might need one of those or something. If your confused, I don't even Know what I'm saying.

Thanks to all of you who returned on my request for
advise on clutch quandry-- I found out that I had the common clutch for the 8N, needed one with anadaptor that comes out from the bearing coller and then has the clutch operations. It is a bit longer to fit the smaller diameter socket hole and reach
in so the roll pin fits.

Again thanks to everyone and to all you stud vets
have a mad minute this forth, I'm having two.

Godspeed and keep well outside the wire

Rob

Your pto splines and the adapter will wear very very fast, not recommended.
