Am replacing the electric water tank in the rental house we own. Have to cut and solder the 1/2 inch copper pipe as the new unit is a couple of inches taller. Can I cut and join a pipe that is vertical, will the solder run uphill. Tried another board on another question but don't get the response that I get here. Thanks, BC Mike C

Please protect any framing or wallboard from excess heat from the torch. You wouldn't believe how many fires we go to from beginner and experience plumbers setting the houses on fire by carelessness.

Concentrate your heat on the fitting more than the pipe. The solder should be drawn in, quickly remove the heat as you continue to add solder for a good looking joint, "a second or so". Don't try to paste it on the pipe or it will leak.

No problem for the solder. Just make certain the joints are clean, both male and female. Use a little flux and should have no problem.

Yup. Clean the inside of the fitting and the outside of the pipe with a plumber's brush or emery cloth. Make sure it is shiny. Put some paste on the pipe, join them, heat the fitting, not the pipe, and apply the solder. You will see the solder actually "run" around the opening and fill it.
Also remember to close the valve (obviously) upstream, but open the little drain on the valve and remove the water from the line. Water is drawn to the hot point, and will make it hard for the solder to fill the crack.
Last, as it is potable water, be sure to use lead free solder. You might, but may not have to, use a cleaner propane than standard (sometimes known as MAPP gas), as lead free solder melts at a higher temperature.
