A guy told me I could find some help here. so here it goes. I have a 52 8n. The clutch has been slipping for a while. It finally got to the point that it would barely pull up the driveway. I noticed that when I put a little pressure on the pedal there was a jumping sensation on the pedal. I was going to move it out of the barn yesterday and it would barely move. As it was creeping backwards I decided that I better leave it where its at or I won't get it back in. Well, when I went to first gear and moved it back forward, creeping, I could not get it out of first. The clutch pedal fell almost to the running board. I shut it off and pulled it out of first. Now, before you guys rake me over the coals for letting the clutch get that bad, believe me when I say I feel bad enough already. Did I destroy the trans or has the clutch just gone to pieces? Or both? I would really appreciate any info. Thanks

No rake?? Can we use a disk?? LOL :)

Hey, I am new too, so can't talk :)
My 8N seems to have a clutch problem too.
I adjusted the bolt on the outside where linkage hooks up so it would allow clutch to move farther.
Now I seem to have more, & don't smell it getting hot. Also finaly found 2 more low gears and that helped! I think I was starting it out in third gear and slipping the clutch.

It sounds to me like the clutch plate is not being held against the flywheel evenly or fully by the pressure plate. As mentioned in other posts, got to break her in half to inspect.
Before you do, visually check external linkage for any interference. A stick or weed debris might not let the clutch fully engage. The clutch pedal may be rubbing the foot board and not fully releasing the clutch.
If you go inside, look for loose bolts holding the pressure plate to the flywheel. Look at the pressure plate fingers for uneven wear or broken. Look at the throughout bearing for wear or disintigration.
I used to "replace all" whenever I went inside. What a waste of good parts. My '51 had a clutch problem about 20 years ago and I figured after 30+ years it needed to be replaced, $100. Everything looked good and when I put it back together, it still didn't work. It was an exteranl problem. Hope that helps (hth)

Something is hanging up or broken in your clutch system. You will have to split the tractor and it will be obvious once you get in to it. It will be a good experience for you and is not difficult. You will need jacks and a cherry picker if you can get one. You will know a lot ;more about Fords after you get done! It is a good chance to clean up the whole engine area while you are in there. You might replace the throwout brg while you are at it if you don't want to repeat the process! Just go slow and be observant. The good news is that any parts you will need are readily available and relatively cheap (that is Ford 8N normal).

BJ-

First welcome to our world.

You'll need to split the tractor and rebuild your clutch. I doubt you hurt the tranny. Replace Clutch disk, throw-out bearing, check/resurface/replace pressure plate as needed, resurface flywheel if needed, check/replace flywheel ring gear if needed, replace PTO shaft seal.

If you don't know how to split the tractor and want to do it yourself, I suggest buying the overhaul video available on this and other sites.

Best of luck.
