Howdy all, I have a friend that has an N that I've been looking at for a while from a distance. I asked him about it and got some vague answers. Then his house burned to the ground. So he was not around and out of respect I didn't go down there to check on the tractor. My question is how to tell the difference from a 9N, 2N, and 8N. He said it had a front mount dist. 3 forward gears and appears to be stuck in gear(according to the tractor shop). Apparently it does not have position control(He has been using chains). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance; Rob

Just look to the left side of the page, under "Serial numbers", click it, Ford, and 2n, and it will give the years and serial numbers. On the tractor, the serial number is hand stamped on the engine block, drivers' side, near the oil filter. 2N's are stamped "9N", so don't be confused. Bob in NY

Well an 8N has the right and left brake on the right side and a 9n has the right brake on the right side and the left brake on the left side with the clutch. Hope this helps.

Sounds like a 9n/2n. My 8n has 4 gears and I believe all ( most? ) stock 8n trannies are also 4 gears. Also, we have position control, as well as draft.

As for the 9n/2n... have to let one of the masters here answer you.

good luck.

"Soundguy" is correct. Only the 8N's had 4-speed forward. So it is either a 2N or 9N.
Your serial number will start with (9N) in either case. Also check the casting number on the rear end to get a date & year. Many engines were changed over the years.
