Yep,
My 1952 8N has a coil resistor on the panel behind the dash. I bought the 8N seven years ago from my wifes great uncle who has has it for almost 30 years before me. I called him yesterday and he remembers when he had it worked on 15 years ago, the guy somehow shorted out, and burnt up the wiring. The guy made replaced the wiring with the harness out of another tractor.
So, there is a coil resistor, but if I do have fire in the coil as Dell so eloquently said, the resistor must be OK. Still won't start, I'm goint to start replacing the ignition stuff again.

Get the harness. Look in the archives for proper wiring, which does not include a resistor. Check for proper coil type.
Dell did not say the resistor was OK in the way you mean it. Yes it is not burned out if it is in the circuit and you are getting voltage but it does not belong there.

BISHOP, This does NOT have to be hard, It is a really simple electrical system, but it is complicated by the facts that you are not trained in electronics/electricity and somebody has been MESSING WITH IT, so it is no longer original. There are a lot of people on this board that could have your tractor running in just a few minutes, but we cannot see what you see. Go ahead and get a new wiring harness and get a multimeter. Both items are cheap and both will reap rewards worth many times their cost. If it has the original 6V electrical system, replacing the harness should be pretty easy and will eliminate a lot of possible trouble spots. After you get the new harness on, and have a VOM (multimeter-a meter capable of measuring AC/DC voltages and DC current, let us know that you are ready and we will walk you through some tests that will certainly have your tractor running in short order. Of course you have the option of paying someone locally to come buy and fix your tractor, but that will take longer, cost a lot more, and will not be nearly as satisfying as fixing it yourself. You can get excellent help here for FREE. Why not use it.

Since a new wiring harness is so cheap, why bother trying to run down the problems in the non-Ford harness? I'd want to eliminate that as a possibility.

Put in a new one. Then run thru your dist/tune-up items, your firing order, etc.

Bishop..... .....I'm glad you understand the part about a bad resistor will make your sparkies NOT WORK.

BUT DO YOU UNDERSTAND the part about 6 volt sidemount 52 8N's should NEVER....EVER....have a dashmounted resistor?

If you are really using a resistor in your 6 VOLT sidemount 52 8N ignition system, then ya ain't gonna haff enuff sparkies to fire off nuttin. UNDERSTAND???

ONLY early (47-50) 8N's with the frontmount distributor should have the "infamous ballast resistor" mounted on the backside of the dashpanel. AND they MUST have the ballast resistor OR ELSE they will fry the frontmount ignition coil, understand? ..... ..... .respectfully, Dell

If you checked and found a resistor, then you probably do have one, but are you sure it is in the circuit? If the harness was replaced at one time, the resistor is not part of the harness, so someone must have changed out your terminal block as well. Trace out your wiring again to see if it is being used. There is also a possibility someone stuck in a 12 volt coil and in that case you just might need a dropping resistor for a 6 volt system. Just never know what someone may have done in the past. Just my .02 worth.

...a definitive answer to this question:
Did you check the insulator on the primary post that goes into the side of the distributor? It's inside the distributor. There's also a small copper strip that attaches to it, unless it's been replaced by some other thing.

If your coil has fire, the breakdown has to be between the coil and plugs, "which is where?" THE DISTRIBUTOR.

You can get a brand new wiring harness for about $13.00 if the one you have has been "modified."
