hey guys, I've been working on this 2N and got it started as I mentioned before. Engine has a knock and clutch is stuck, but with the help of you guys, I'm not worried about those as you all have given me great suggestions. But I found out yesterday that the block also has a crack in it. That kind of bummed me out a bit. I had agreed to give the owner $620 for the tractor. Bear in mind rear tires are in like new shape and new water pump. It actually dosen't sound bad running. Did I pay too much for this and would looking for a used engine already complete be advisable. Sorry for the long post. Thanks in advance. Rob

You could probably part it out for the price you paid for it. Howbeit, like most of us on this Board, once you start rebuilding etc. you will have more in it than it's worth. My $.02

I recently fixed the crack on my 52 8N block with JB Weld. The crack was around 10" long and leaked radiator fluid. I've ran it a few times - and pretty hard too! The repair has held so far and you can't tell it was even there unless you look close and know what you're looking for.

Tell us where the block is cracked before looking for a new one! I have a few cracks that do not hurt anything. In the old days they brazed them as they did mine by the starter. Now they have welding techniques that do permanent repairs. Depending on where it is there are various ways to repair it. Some do not require welding.

Rob, I don't think your hurt. And an external crack in the block can be welded or J/B welded. And this way you can use it while you look for a block. Heck new rear tires are $400 plus, I've gave $750 for a 2n and had to winch it on the trailor with a stuck motor. It depends on how bad you want one , and how much work and money your willing to put into it. Good luck John

The crack is near the bottom of the block on the left side as tou are sitting on the seat. It dosen't appear to have any problem with leaking. It does look like someone has put some kind of sealer on it. If I have to do a rebuild I would probable have a welder with engine block experience take a look. That's good news coming from you guys as usual. I will check out Willy N's block for yucks. However, my financial advisor may poopoo the idea. And I have to live with her. Again thanks for the great advise. Rob

You don't have a problem. I just bought a block with a similar crack. It is better than my block and will cause no problem.

Check out the archives for lock-n-stitch crack repair.. It's another alternative to welding that looks pretty good.
