just wondering, I will have to rebuild the engine on my 2N and have never really done one before. Due to the age, I'm a little leary of just ordering a kit without knowing any bore sizes. Should I get a rebuild Video first? Will that give me the information to look for before I dish out the big bucks for a rebuild kit? Thanks in advance.

FWIW...
I had intended to tackle my '50 8N myself (in fact I made it through the majority of the disassembly), but knew that it was going to have to go to a shop for machine work (turn the crank, weld the crack in the block and press sleeves) that I can't do in my 1/3 complete barn.

I found a shop here in southeast Texas that did the whole gamut (magnaflux and surface the block and head, press sleeves and valve guides, turn the crank, surface the flywheel, new ring gear, new clutch pad, and fully reassemble the engine minus external components and the oil pan) for $750+tax... and that includes parts.

Couldn't really pass that one up...

Steve

Steve,

Would you mind sharing the name and location of that outfit? I'm south of Houston and I'm going to be going through my 8N this winter. I need to find a good machine shop within reasonable distance.

If you surfaced both the block and head make sure you check valve clearance. if both are shaved your gonna be cutting it close.

I agree about getting the video if you have doubts. It will help you plan your rebuild, parts to expect, tools and extra hands needed, etc. Fortunately, these engines are very easy to overhaul, just do a complete job. That means never asume anything is in good shape on a 50+ year old engine. VERIFY everything from head warpage to clean oil passages to crank specs to tight studs, etc. or you'll be back in there.

Also, since you have to split the tractor, you may as well replace any worn clutch parts, ALL seals, replace ring gear (if worn)too.

Rob 9n, forget about rebuild kit for now, get the video, check it out, it will give you an idea of what your getting into. Feel confident. go for it, if not let the pros handle it.

I agree about the video. I have all three and they are some of the best investments that I have made. The engine rebuild video gave me the confidence to do it myself. There is nothing like seeing it done before doing it.

You might check local shops, there are a lot of mistakes you can make and around here, you can get it done for about $200 over the cost of parts. The kits are relatively cheap. You may not be able to do the valve job either.
