OT Manual translation

Parked the farm truck ( a 3/4 ton Chev ) time to drive the winter mobile a small Isuzu pickup ( partly owned by GM ) Put a new timing belt on today. The manual says, under adjustment. " Loosen the tensioner lock bolt so only the spring is applying pressure. Install the crankshaft sprocket bolt and use it to turn the cranshaft in the normal direction of rotation (counterclockwise) through two complete revolutions. So after carefully aligning the new belt I turned the crank in the normal direction and the belt jumped a few teeth and I had to line it up again. This time I turned it anti clockwise and it worked okay but after I had locked the tension wheel in place I went clokwise again to be sure. Which way would you turn the crank with these instructions. I think the tranlation is a little mixed up. Elswhere in the book it says to change the clutch plate at 60000 km. I have 242000 on the truck with the original clutch. Maybe it is getting time to change it. Sorry it's not a tractor story but it is mechanical. BC Mike C

I am not sure exactly what you mean by " This time I turned it anti clockwise". I have installed a lot of timing belts and chains on a lotta different kinds of vehicles. The only ones that I have seen where the "normal direction of rotation" was counterclockwise were marine engines. Every car,or truck, that I have ever worked on, the normal direction is clockwise.Looking at the motor from the front. After you get the marks lined up, loosen the bolt to let the spring put tension on the belt. You may have to "help" it a little. Tighten the bolt. Then turn it a turn or two CLOCKWISE. Recheck your timing alignment marks. If they are still good, you are done. If not, try again. Also note, some of those engines also drive the distributor with a gear off of the timing belt. If so, you have to make sure that the rotor is pointing to number one plug wire AND the timing marks line up before tightening the belt. Good luck with it.

David O, thank you for the reply, you are correct. The bit that was missing in the manual was ( tighten the bolt then turn it clockwise ) With out the bolt being tight and only the spring applying pressure ( that's what the manual said to do )the belt slipped on the teeth when I turned it clockwise but did not slip when turned anti clockwise. The distributor is not a factor on this one only the oil pump which did not need alighning. I will know better next time. BC Mike C
