The machine shop can hone the sleeves if I remove them. If they don't come out I have to remove the crank and cam and all the fuel firing mechanism. I've got a slide hammer puller and the sleeves have moved just a little. How much force can I apply. I do not want to break anything. The sleeves extend into the crank area about 1/4 inch. They are at least 3/16 thick, and have a lip at the top to stop them falling through. It's about 39f in the garage. Would warming the cast iron block help. Thanks for any suggestions. BC Mike C. That would be our premier that got booked for DUI in Maui

Is this a wet sleeve or dry sleeve motor? If it's
a wet sleeve the visible portion in the crank is likely just a flange and the sleeve itself is considerably thicker. Wet sleeves sometimes use a sealer on the bottom end between sleeve shoulder and block counterbore (gasket). If this is the case, once the bottom's out of the counterbore they'll probably lift right out. All of this begs the issue - why hone a sleeve?

Dan they are wet sleeves. There is not a lot of wear but I would need to hone them so the new rings will seat. But your question is most valid, I will price new sleeves on Monday. BC Mike C

Hey Mike I have some disks at work with tons of yanmar info, we have been remanufacturing their starters since 1998. let me know what engine you have, and i'll try to send you the docs in question, if you don't already have a parts catalog/listing. Jim Cox

Jim I would appreciate that. It is a 2QM15 1979 vintage. I have the original owners manual but it does not cover this type of stuff. BC Mike C

Hi Mike,

Heating the block may help. Since the sleeves have only moved a little, I would either use a little more force or try to rent, buy or make an apparatus/tool that uses a long threaded bolt to get the sleeves out (like a gear puller).

Zane Sherman would be a good source for technical assistance on this project. He could probably fabricate a tool that you could purchase from him to do this.

Another suggestion; why can’t you just take the whole tractor to the machine shop?

Where there is a will, there is a way. HTH. Rick H. Ga.

Rick I like your threaded bolt idea. It would apply constant pressure. I was not comfortable with the wacking nature of the slide hammer puller. Bill is correct the engine is out of my boat, but larger versions can be found in tractors. I usually do whatever work I am capable of myself, and pay the pros for stuff when I have to. BC Mike C

Would not it be better to hone the sleeves while they were installed?
They will probably not be round if removed.

There would be too much dust and stuff from the honing with the crank still in place. It is easier to remove the sleeves than remove the crank. I may put in new sleeves if the price is reasonable. They are quite solid and can be honed okay out of the block. BC Mike C

I'm pretty sure this yanmar is outta his boat, not his tractor.
