Just kinda thinking out loud, I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to just rebuild the block on my 2N instead of doing the whole thing. The engine starts quick and runs great. Just after a few second you can hear a rod starting to knock. I do have a crack in the block but I think it might be alright, Is this advisable? All opinions highly appreciated. Thanks, Rob

Thanks for the response. I guess my concern is would there be any reason to rebuild the head if it seems ok? Like I said, the engine woks beautifully with the exception of the knock. Thanks. Rob

Not much to rebuild on a flathead's head. Clean it up, look for cracks, check for warpage. Valves are in the block.

Rob, Many block cracks can be successfully repaird by welding or one of the many commercially available materials. Some cracks can NOT be successfully repaired. An engine that is knocking very seldom gets any better, usually gets worse and does more damage the longer it is run. But you probably know this if you can identify an rod knock.

Rob, the crack in the block is clearly YOUR call, but a failing rod may spell the end of the block AND the useability of the tractor... If the cracked block just leaks a bit of coolant, that may well be liveable.... a rod thru the side (or bottom), isn't. Your call..... duey
