Got a message from a fellow boater in Lake Keowee, said it was getting cold, what should he do with the engine. I told him to drain the block, the exhaust and the pump system. Boat motors usually cool with what they are floating in, in this case fresh water. Also told him if nothing came out of the drain holes to put a heater next to the motor and pray. Got me thinking about what might be the best way to warm an engine that has already frozen. Some of the boaters run an anti freeze mix through the engine before it freezes. This guy was a newbie. I hope his motor did not freeze. BC Mike C

Every spring my buddy the salvage man gets a pickup full of cracked I/O blocks from one marine dealer. Gotta drain 'em up here.

The best thing you could do (in a pinch, and besides draining the block), in a place like S.C., is keep the boat in the water. The lake won't freeze, and if it's an I/O, keeping it in the water basically keeps the I/O and the engine at the same temp as the lake water. The outside air temp needs to get down to around 21F for a full day or so, before the water in the engine block will get to 32F and freeze. If it's out of the water, the AVERAGE temp for the day needs to be below 32F for 2 days before it really freezes up hard.

When he first sent a message he did not say if he was in the puddle or not, and he also said it was gonna go down to 9F. I thought yikes if the boat is on the hard this thing is gonna freeze. Fortunately the boat is still in the puddle. It has a shaft drive, it's in a sail boat. Did not know where Lake Keowee was as well. These engines are easy to drain, he's just a new owner and did not think about it. Maybe it does not usually get cold down there. I leave our boat in the water up here and the lake does freeze but it doe not hurt anything. BC Mike C

BC Mike- I missed 1 drain plug on an inboard boat motor (chev), and ruined a very expensive manifold! Those Volvo Diesels are not cheap to repair. I would get the service manual asap, and try to find a fantastic Volvo boat motor discussion board with great information like this one, and see what they say.

If the motor is an inboard/outbord or an inboard it's important to remove all drain plugs (usually 2-6) from block and manifolds. Run a piece of wire in each hole as they are often clogged with sand or scale. Don't forget to drain and change the gear lube in the outdrive or lower unit if an outboard. Good luck.

Hey BC MikeC, if it is an outboard it is probably ok. Most all fresh water will drain from the engine as soon as the boat is removed from the water (gravity). If it is an inboard, too bad. They are the same as a car, all those neat little nooks and crannys for water to hide. It may be too late to worry about it. Buckeye.

Forgot to mention, it is a small Volvo inboard diesel. My Yanmar is easy to drain which I have to do every time I leave the boat if its gonna go below freezing. Got the new parts for mine so I can start putting it back together. BC Mike C

Big Mike,
FYI Lake Keowee is in upstate SC, near the NC mountains. closest big town is Greenville.
I am looking at the water as I type. Live on the lake. Nice.
